I purchased this Hunting Sword direct from the family. He said that he thought it was from about 1750 and had been in his family since then. It has several problems, blade corroded, broken cross guard, and leather scabbard coming apart (I used Nedsfoot oil to preserve the leather). Would appreciate comments? Thanks Jim

I would agree that this is an old piece though how old needs somebody more experienced than me. Shame about the condition but I haven't seen many from this period much better, I'm sure there are though. How you would go making it any better or even if it were worth it I do not know, I would enjoy it for what it is if it were mine. Thanks for showing it, it proves the point yet again what a huge variety there is to collecting hirschfängers or in your case Jagdschwert.

While I was in Germany I took it to a master knife repairer and she said don't touch it as it would wreck it historical value. So I have left it as it is.
