Odal, welcome to the forum..That is just stunning! Beautiful! That's one of the best hand made rings I've seen...

What kind of work did he do before the war?

I have seen many rings on the forum , but never a ring made in Russian imprisonment.
The front picture and the cloverleaves show an optimistic and positive vieuw , inspite of being a prisonner there. Also the date is interesting, normally "war-rings" end in 1945; this one in 1948.
Cheers,
Benten

Hallo

my grandfather worked before war a "holzbildhauer" (I dont know your word).
He made statues and ornament from wood.
The sign on the ring is the sign of our family. a farmer with corn in his hands.
The letters "HK" on top is the name of my grandfather, Hermann Kndler, the "PR" at the bottom means "Paula Reim" (Name of my grandmother).
Right side: "S, T, U" means "Suse, Traude, Ursula" - Names of the Daughters
Left side: 1931 - Date the married
1948 - Year when the ring was made in camp number 17 "moltow"/Russia
He was the untill 11. or 19. march 1949

Greetings - an sorry for my english

Now you tell the family story to the ring.....The interesting technique on the ring is more of a woodcarver indeed , the front is worked out deeply ( a bit 3D ). I mean this very positive. It's not an engraving on a flat field. As you certainly know Germany is famous for its
woodcraft for example in the medioval churches; altar retables.
Does the figure represent some one ( from a medioval story ) ? What hold he in his hands?
I presume this beautiful ring is of an big value for you. Smile

odal,
Your Grandfather had talent and it must have been difficult for him depending on the tools they let him use. Did he make others for the guards?
Thanks for showing some of your family history.
