Has anyone noticed that the tang nuts on EP&S early SA & SS daggers are much shorter in the area where you put the wrench ?

See picture. EP&S is on the left. At the Raleigh show this weekend, I happened to notice this on two EP&S daggers.

It may be just these two daggers.

Comments ?

I have experienced this as well Dave. On a few of mine, it is a delicate thing to get the thin wrench under the nut to turn it without damaging it. Very close tolerance on only a very few.

Nobody ever here of "Vise Grips" make sure you don't get the ones with the smooth jaws they only slip if the nuts to tight Big Grin
On the serious side before everyone calls me nuts You can also buy a tappet wrench (I think this is what it's called) in the right size. It's a thin automotive wrench Sometimes they have to be ground down abit to fit Cool

I had a Pack SS that I could only get the very tip of my ground down wrench on, as it had such as short shoulder as you have mentioned, Dave.

I had probably seen differences in tang nuts without noticing until I saw the two EP&S daggers next to other daggers. It makes sense because the nuts were a high volume supplier item. Pack obviously used that supplier and probably others. I'm going to keep my eyes open and see if RZM daggers are found with those nuts.

There are two other ways to get the nuts off without a wrench. One is to use spark plug boot pliers - see below.

The other way is to make a pair of copper jaw inserts or convers for a larger vice. You then clamp the nut tightly in the vice and rotatethe dagger. The copper grips the nut without leaving marks.

I purchased one of these, very similar to the one in this thread:

http://daggers.infopop.cc/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/172097...760096753#8760096753

It works a charm. Don't know if it's an authentic piece or not but it certainly does the job.

Let's not forget the wrench that comes with Dremel tools - it is the rightsize and pretty thin too

Charlie,

That Dremel or for that matter the Penn wrench would not fit on the EP&S dagger pictured.

My EP dagger has also a shorter step length.
But I am not a dagger opener at all perhaps when I know it is an untouched/never opened piece.

Mine is a shorter step as well. I'd never take a wrench to it. I used a leather loop to loosen it. Hand tightened after that. Too much value lost if the grip is over-tightened
