Seiler:

It's ok, the Canadians are coming. But, they tend to be a lot more stingy bunch, eh?

I hope to see you all and talk about collectibles, and not about the fiscal mess in the world, at the MAX!!!!!

Can someone tell me how set up day of the Max show went?
Plus let us know how attendance is tomorrow.
Good luck to all GDC members who are there.
Thanks

I was there today and it seemed on the slow side. Talking with some of the larger Dealers they agreed that it was slower than usual. It could be that a lot of potential customers were at work today or the economy is playing a role in it. My guess is there's less money to spend.

Hi, I was at the MAX all day. Attendance seemed to be what it usually is. Not overly crowded. The aisles are very wide, so this also creates the effect of it not being too crowded. I looked at alot of relics and the dealers seem anxious to sell and immediately dropped the price. Tomorrow (Saturday) there should be more buyers because it is the weekend.

A few Dealers told me that they will be packing up early and leaving tomorrow. That was something you didn't see much in past years.

Thats a Shame...so much for the Max and their "friendly Attitude"....They must have meant to say They would be friendly if you had your wallet open.

Found that most dealers would drop their price around 20% immediately if asked. The action at the dealer tables seemed to much less than last year.

I went on Friday with a friend. I only bought a couple of books and a Kuban shield from Jason Burmeister. I did see a very special piece of Allach which I liked alot. I had to go and get some cash to buy it but when I returned at 3:00 the dealer had already packed up and left.Had I known he was leaving that early I would have made some arrangements. Prices were high as usual. SA daggers in low excellent condition were priced in the 850 to 1100 dollar range. These are the daggers that just a few years ago were priced in the 300 to 400 dollar range. I didn't see anybody buying any though. My friend did find a very nice Eickhorn ground Rohm for 600 dollars. Had to look through hundreds of SA's to find that deal.I still enjoyed the show which is all that really matters. My friend went back on Saturday and told me that many of the dealers left well before the 5:00 closing time. To me the show seems to be mostly a place for dealers to get together for private transactions with not much consideration for the entrance paying public. Mike

Heres the Kuban shield that I bought from Jason. Nothing special but very historical and beautiful which is why we collect these things.

Also I would like to say that dealers should plan on staying to the 5:00 closing time on both days. Slow sales or bordom should not be a reason to leave as many potential buyers wait to late in the day to spend their money. If you need to leave earlier to catch a plane or whatever you should put a sign on your table stating the time that you will stop conducting business. Mike

Too bad you missed that Allach piece...worse for the Dealer that he had to go home with it and missed a potential sale and better yet might have gained a Good customer...Now he will never know.

NICE Shield by the way.

Mike,

Yes, a shame that you missed out on the porcelain that you planned on buying... Frown
The exact same thing happened to me last year,
but in the end it worked out for the best. Smile
Several months later I found the same piece at a much better price.

Can you tell us what pattern you were looking for? Maybe we can keep an eye open for you?

I thought the show went well, all things considered. I wasn't looking for anything in particular and ended up with something that I never could have imagined ... an extremely rare, early bronze owl by Prof. Kärner. Just what the doctor ordered! I hadn't planned on spending that much money, but when I saw this unit, I immediately changed my mind - Big Grin

Hope some more of you fellas may have also found that special treasure that really made your day, too.

Best regards to all !

Bill

Just back from the MAX. Had a great show - sold a dagger, a spare Eickhorn quality control tag, lots of my headgear stands and bought a few things (no show-stoppers ) and had a blast meeting up with many of you from the Forum.

The show was off a bit in attendance, but more tables than last year. Prices were just about in line with last year it seemed to me. No doubt that the economic woes we've been experiencing of late - or rather the uncertainty stemming from them - had an impact. Most dealers reported that they had a decent show, but no one was claiming this one was their best ever...certainly understandable. I did notice that the Europeans in general, and the Russians in particular, were buying a lot! They were two and three deep at Tom Jonhson's table at times (I was set up right next to him) and buying several pieces at a time. Weitze bought a nice, cased, DKiS from my table partner and I saw others leaving each day with carts of stuff (and we're not talking black wound badges and EK-II's here)

Plans for next year are as follows:
The Show will return to Monroeville
The host hotel will be what was until recently the Radisson
The Radisson is being completely remodeled and will emerge on the other side smaller and as a Doubletree Hotel
The ExpoMart will not serve as the Show hall. It, too, is being remodeled and will not be the same type of venue in the future
There is a large building just across the street that is being converted to a convention center/show hall similar - but smaller than - the ExpoMart. As a result, it will not accommodate as many tables - if you plan to have a table at MAX XXV, it's probably not a good idea to wait until the last minute
As soon as contact information is available for the Doubletree, it will be made available. Again, since it will be smaller, it's probably a good idea to get that done early
Best,
Skip

From what I heard the Russians were purchasing SA Daggers in balk and I think Tom Johnson had most of them at his tables.

I DID NOT GO THIS YEAR DUE TO THE SHOW'S LOCATION. FLYING IN IS A PAIN AS THE AIRPORT IS OVER AN HOUR AWAY FROM MONROEVILLE. ROAD CONGESTION IN THE AREA IS TERRIBLE. THERE ARE FEW GOOD RESTUARANTS IN THE AREA. INDIANAPOLIS SOUNDED LIKE A GO FOR ME NEXT YEAR. WITH A RETURN TO MONROEVILLE, I WILL SKIP ANOTHER MAX.

Bob, See you in a few years as Monroeville might be the location for a while to come.

SA? Houston Coates has Mark Paul's collection - that is the most I saw in one place.

Show was great for me.Found more than I was hoping for. Already have a table for next year.
As for restraunts, you must be pretty pickey.
There are several right in the area.
Scored a near mint Holler 21.
I`m happy.

Bob,

I don't know what time you got to PIT, but we arrived about 9:15 PM on Wednesday. I took a friend to the airport on Saturday and we went back to catch our flight out on Sunday. None of the trips took longer than 30 minutes. If your trip took longer than that because of rush hour traffic, that's another story but it's not an inherent problem.

In addition, we had two excellent meals on Thursday and Friday (The Grand Concourse at Station Square is simply amazing with respect to both food and atmosphere, while Buca Di Beppo, even though it's a chain, is a good place to go if you have a large group). Neither trip back into Pittsburgh took longer than 20 minutes from the Comfort Inn to the parking lot at Station Square.

The move back to the same hotel with the show hall literally across the street is fine by me. As I've said on may occasions, the only thing I'd miss the MAX Show for is a funeral...mine!

Best,

Hi did anyone else find that the price, for the most part on German helmets (excluding SS and Fallschirmjager of course) seemed pretty reasonable when compared to other years and shows? cheers, Ryan

Was Pvon there? Hopefully if he was, he took a load of pics to show us non-attendees! If anyone has pics, can you post them?

Pvon was not there. But his long time buddy, Ed Sunday, was.

I don't know who was taking pics, but I guess we will be seeing them soon.

Tom and I did very well in selling daggers. We did have a nice group of SAs and sold well to the foreign dealers.
Also, other daggers sold well. This was one of the best dagger shows that I have had in a few years, so I am a happy camper.
The reason that more tables sold at this show than before was the fact that the show had no one wanting to display. For the first time in 24 years, there was no display area and this allowed for additional tables to be sold and the space was available the last few weeks to allow for more tables to be sold.
