Reading some of the topics here lately I've seen hinted that it would be nice to have a GAB topic here.

The F&R is my only example. Have an eye out for an early hollow back example for the collection.  (We need a smiley with binoculars).  Does anyone have examples of hollow back GAB's to share? --dj--Joe

 are those screwback gabs for real?,,,i have never purchased any,and have never seen one brought back from a vet,,same with the sb eagle clasp,,whats the consensus on these?,,,thanks,,robert

Screwback GAB's, IAB's and even PAB's and clasps to the EK are known or at least by consensus are considered to be of period manufacture.
Deumer and Juncker factory produced (special orders) Gab's.
Special orders also resulted in IAB examples.
Jewler transformations and in field conversions account for some IAB's, GAB's and PAB's in a screwback configuration.
I feel screwbacks are rare to find. Like many badges and awards fakes exist.
Kevin S., would you care to open a discussion on your example? I am not at all sure about it.

There were real screwbacks...
Pieces of History out of AZ used to make a fairly decent looking reproduction screwback GAB about 15 years ago.. At first they fooled many. I'm not sure about this one,,it does look pretty good!
I have a couple hollow backs and maker marked badges I'll dig out eventually..

This example has a steel catch and thin pin that I'm pretty sure was replaced. Ball hinge.

i have my doubts on the screw back Assmann example posted here,,,the trademark doesnt match known examples as pictured in Frank Heukemes "A DEFINITVE GUIDE TO THE GERMAN AWARDS OR WORLD WAR II:THE GENERAL ASSAULT BADGE",,none of the trademarks shown are on the specimen here,,,i remember seeing all sorts of screw back badges in the late 80's and 90's that had this style Assmann logo w/screw back,which at that time i believed were bad as the dealer had multitudes of examples oh the gab and eagle spange,,when i inquired of the authenticity of the badges,he coyly replied,that he "did'nt guarantee they were,,,they are what they are",,,also the badge is not a known pattern produced by the firm,,the details to the front and to a lesser extent,the reverse as illustrated in the above book,do not match the pictured ones and would make me tend to shy away from purchasing this badge,i guess if it had veteran provenance,that would settle the issue,if this an uncatalogued variant,then the book is not definitive,at least it could have been when published,,,,my 2c worth,,,

Not to digress too much off topic, but what other repros was Cave Creek cranking out back then? Anyone have any of thier examples? I should be curious to actually look and compare some photos.

 i have seen extremely good examples of pilots badges,Juncker marked,,,and i believe that the whole series of Luft & several of the KM badges were produced,,have not up to this time seen any #'d badges that were produced by this outfit,if any,,,robert

Stan, is it the angle or is something amiss with your example? What is the blob at the base of the obverse wreath between the acorns? Would you mind some discussion on this badge also?

I was looking for something and stumbled on this thread. I see most have confirmed screwbacked GAB's existed. I have some form of proof. An original, untampered with Kavallerie Rittmeister (Hauptmann equivalent) with attachment holes sewn in for screwback EK1 and screwback GAB. You think screwbacks are rare? This is the only untampered with tunic I have ever seen with an attachment hole for a screwback GAB. (Pity I don't own one!) I will post some pictures later. David!

And the screwback EK1 is of the style with a top positioning pin, and the only one of those I have is made by that master of post war production - Rudolf Souval.
Whilst I appreciate the difference between the post war and wartime Souval initials (rounded versus angular), this one is simply marked "L 58" on the rear of the spinner.
I admit to very little knowledge of the EK series. Does anyone know if there were any obvious differences between wartime Souval EK1 screwbacks, and post war?
I'll post some pictures if that will help.
