Thats the name given to the largest stag a 24 ender bagged by Kaiser Wilhhelm II in the Goldap section of the preserve on the 29th September 1910 during a hunt listed as "Hunt no. 20 between 24th Sept- Oct 5th." This hirschfnger maker marked P.D. Lneschloss with an unusual royal gunsmith as a purveyor, H. Barella, Hofbchsenmacher, Berlin. The Tang is also well marked "echter damacener MD" - Max Dinger. I think we can speculate that this piece was eith given to the Kaiser in commemuration of that particular hunt or as a gift to his Forester who looked after that section of the preserve. Whoever it was presented too it is without doubt one of the finest hirschfngers I have seen to date. The fittings are fire gilded, the blade is a wonderful Band pattern damascus which turns to a more loose yet distinctly different banding in the etch template areas. On both the skinner and main knife the highlights are in gold relief. My sincerest thanks for the information on this pieces must go to Kolibri, additional information and the pictures are from Bill Warda.

Paul, This piece was in a long time collection in the States, it's from one of Ron Weinand and Tom Johnsons buys, it's pictured in the TJ&TW Imperial volume Pg 278. I doubt very much if the actual reciprient will ever be known, I don't think the quality is quite there for a royal piece, it's almost certainly a gift from Kaiser Wilhelm II to ???. Here you can see the gilt on the ricasso and the PDL mark.

I got to say guys that I do love finding these pieces, there's something about hirschfngers with this sort of history that make them more than just a blade.
Kolibri, Thanks once again for all the information, and thanks to you guys who posted on this thread. Perhaps if I get lucky I might be able to pin down who this blade was awarded to.
Many Thanks
Gary

Again I must thank Kolibri for these wonderful pictures, this one of 3 stags bagged on this hunt, the middle Stag being the 24 ender Pascha.

A picture taken a year later of Oberfrster Witte in charge of the Goldap section of the Rominten preserve. It would be nice to think he was the guy awarded the Hirschfnger.

Great dagger and very interesting information on the hunting tradition in Germany. Could you please give more details about this habit of giving names to those big bucks?
A few years ago I read in a biography of Herman Goering that a stag was actually named after him! If I remember well, it was killed by an Ambassador who was accompanying the Reichmarshall on a hunt. Goering jokingly told the Ambassador: "you just killed me", and the Ambassador replied: "if only it was true".

Gary,
it is sure, that Oberfrster Witte was leading the Kaiser on Pascha in September 1910.
Again, your hirschfnger is outstanding. A real piece of history. I have to thank you for sharing it with us.

Thought I might bring this one back to the top, about a year ago I saw a similar piece but as a shooting award by the same maker advertised for sale in an Italian auction. It's one of my all time favourites.

I thought I might bring this stunning artifact back to the top again.
Could Baz69 (Gary) be related to Merlin?
Baz69 (Gary) does seem to have some kind of magic to acquire some of the very best artifacts seen on GDC.
"Merlin - Wikipedia Merlin (Welsh: Myrddin, Cornish: Merdhyn, Breton: Merzhin) is a mythical figure prominently featured in the legend of King Arthur and best known as a magician."
Baz69 (Gary) also credits his friends and associates for their help and information in acquiring these mind-blowing, stunning artifacts.
Thanks again to Baz69 (Gary) for the privilege of seeing the best of the best.
