Can anyone tell me for sure if SS-Generalmajor Sylvester Stadler was awarded the German Cross in Gold, or not? Some references indicate that he received it on 21.4.1942, whereas other references say that he never received it. All fotos that I've seen of Stadler with his badges showing do not show him wearing a German Cross, altho do show him wearing his Gold Close Combat Clasp that was awarded on 12.12.43. So if 1943 pictures of him show him wearing the Gold Close Combat Clasp he received on 12.12.43, then why isn't he wearing the German cross in Gold that he supposedly won back on 21.4.42???

Here is a signed photo Silvester STADLER (himself) sent to me in 1985. At that time there was no information indicating he received the German Cross in Gold..

He never got the German Cross. Was Swords holder and won the Close Combat Clasp in Gold. His detailed complete biography with all available award recommendation texts is in vol. 2 of "German Cross in Gold Holders of the SS and Police," Bender Publishing.

Because the book also includes all holders of the Roll of Honor Clasp, Close Combat Clasp in Gold for each volume by unit, data on all divisional elements with development and divisional commanders, First Staff Officers, and other background data. Stadler led the elements of the division reforming in early 1944 while Kampfgruppe "Das Reich" was in Russia, won the Close Combat Clasp in Gold, and is also relative in the book as he recommended men for the German Cross and data on all recommendations and forms is included. My mistake however, his award text recommendations are in one of my previous books, "Waffen-SS Commanders" volume 2 and are not in the GC book. Just biographical data and photos in the German Cross volume.
