The voice on the phone said I am going to be in town tomorrow with some things I know you will like. This was on my birthday the 14th of this week. I have always been looking for a extra large cuckoo clock but I changed my mind when I saw this large mantel clock with the hogs and the 4 dogs taking it down. The clock is carved out of one solid block of wood as is the humidor. I have had a history of hog hunting as my father in laws father had the hog rights on 20,000 acres and my great past time got to be deer and hog hunting with hounds. I had 4 hounds for 14 years. The stories of dogs and woods are endless.
This purchase included a folio of prints painted for the Kaiser�s hunt. A clock and a humidor wood carving. 5 Hirschfangers. A ink well. A watch fob and a shooting award necklace.

You've hit the jackpot old boy, these pieces are great additions to your fine collection.

The wood carving on the clock is of the highest quality and the finest of its kind that I've seen in a long, long time. The artist who carved this work was a master in the truest sense of the word. The icing on the cake is/are the two hares running out of their warren to escape the ruckus that's going on topside ...

Should you get a chance, could you possibly
do some scans or shots of the Kaiser's book?
That too looks like the cat's pajamas.

Oh Ralph, your just too much, I doubt it gets any better and for your birthday as well.
Where to start, I have a couple questions,
1) Are the paintings for any specific hunt, some close up pictures please.
2) Can we see some close ups of the hirschf�ngers.

Lets see if we can identify these hirschf�ngers by maker, from top to bottom


With that guy in the etching near the riccasso and I think it has an acanthus leaf design on the lower fitting I would say WK&C, a beautiful Bavarian Gala hirschf�nger.
Then I believe it's another WK&C, what looks like a plain blade but I bet it's not, damascus??. Looks to have descending size acorns on the grip, the scabbard lug is classic WK&C as is the possible acanthus leaf lower scabbard fitting.
The next one down is tough but I think it's WKC possible with just the knights head logo, the long scabbard lug is a trait I see on some of these, the blue and gilt blade as in the top version is just unbelievable, just so rare and a treat for mine eyes.
The bottom piece has to be an Eickhorn with that lower scabbard mount, I can't see it being anything else.
So Ralph how did I do.?.

Please do post some more close up pictures of the hirschf�ngers and the paintings, we have such an opportunity to learn so much from this supreme find.

I want to thank everyone for their nice replies. From your requests I will give a closer look at some of the pieces shown so far. It helps to know others really enjoy and like to compare these beautiful hunting pieces from the past.

A whole jager collection in one transaction, with each one being a work of art. Each piece seems a story unto itself but even for me as a blade guy, it's still that clock. Bravo my friend.

The watch chain is large and heavy. The chain is 15 inches long and the links are one half inch wide. The outside of the watch case is 3 inches across. There are two ivory tusks that look like they came from a small boar. There are two large dark claws and two small claws. I do not place the small ivory teeth like bites? At the very far left of the chain is a small head with tiny ivory teeth in it? I have no knowledge of what all the coins mean. You might note the fine detail of all the oak leaves around the different holders of the items on the chain. Inside the back cover is the following copy etched to the inside plate MEDAILLE D�OR MILAN 1906 with a circular set of coins. Large letters DOXA-HORES CONCOUR LIEGE 1905. The back cover has hunters on horses chasing a hog with hirschfanger, horns and dogs. I cannot picture anything else but a very large hunt master style of man that could wear this type watch and chain.

This type of hirschfanger sword is approximately 29 inches long. If you can picture the dignitaries that are toting these swords think about the heavy watch he is also carrying. Some of these guys had to be very large.

Simply outstanding, that last piece Ralph is the best I have seen of that type bar none, and without doubt a WK&c.That blade looks pristine.
I'm just overwhelmed with these hirschf�ngers, couldn't have gone to a nicer guy.

Well gentelmen like the last picture of this folio I am going to put it to sleep as I pretty well covered everything in this showing that I could. Even the little ink well is in the first picture of this last group.

Many thanks for posting the hunting prints,
they really give the sense of what a big production this type of affair was all about. It must've been pretty exciting for all those involved. After the hunt I would have enjoyed seeing the festive dinner table laid out for the nobles and dignitaries and other high muckedy-mucks.

Marvelous pieces Ralph and keep up the good work of continuing to show pieces from your collection. I find it troubling that it seems only a few of us see the beauty in these works of art. I visited a home in Michigan two weeks ago that had marvelous suites of armor, swords, ivory, and about everything you could imagine. The owner said I was the first person that had seen his collection in years that knew and could appreciate what I was looking at. Ralph, have you ever thought about adding a wing to a museum someplace close to you and let others learn and appreciate what you share with the rest of us? I obtained another third Reich hunting collection this September and will try and post it over the Thanksgiving Holidays. It contains over 30 pieces of hunting
paraphernalia that include 8 daggers.

And those beautiful etched blades, what words can describe the visual enjoyment looking at them can bring. Such artistry of the Third Reich era is why all of us enjoy this "hobby" so much. Thank you for sharing with us.
