I have recently acquired a full Rohm SS dagger with sheath and hanger. It has been neglected for many years and as a result, the blade has suffered some damage from moisture. The front of the blade has discoloration and light rust over about 50% of its surface. The inscription side or reverse is in much better condition with only a bit of discoloration at the tip. The ball on the tip of the scabbard is dented. The remaining metal fittings are OK but could certainly benefit from a judicious cleaning. Since being put into an air conditioned environment, the wood grip seems to have loosened a bit....perhaps from drying? The grip itself is in good shape. It has a Roman Numeral 1 on the cross guard and was made by Herder. I have not removed the grip to see if there is and numbering on the shank beneath, and do not intend to do so. I could provide photos if I knew how to post them. I am interested in advice about cleaning up the blade, or perhaps even where to sell this dagger. Thanks, R.W.

Dave, could you please move this topic to the SS Dagger Forum, where it will get more exposure for the owner?

Cleaning the blade is very difficult, requiring abrading the steel and working around the etching. Where there is corrosion within the etching, it is best left alone. This is a very time consuming and tedious project. It will also remove the original crossgraining, a desirable aspect to most collectors. You may wish to locate recent threads in the restoration forum here regarding cleaning up SA and SS blades for more detailed information. The best place to sell would be right here on this site. You could also try international auction sites, if you are undecided about what price to ask, and let the market find the price bidders are willing to pay. I'm sure some GDC members, including myself, would be interested in purchasing it. I hope this is of help.

Not having the piece in my hand but a question: can that blade effectively BE cleaned or is it best to get off any grime and external dirt and leave the rest alone? It looks to be pretty well corroded to my old eyes. lloyd

It is what it is. I remember Tom Wh. telling me that for a ss man to keep his dagger with an Ernie Rhohm signature was high treason. So no matter what the cond. thats a rare bird you have there. Leave it as is (maybey a little cleaning) and enjoy it for what it is!!

reds, I have read the same thing about treason. Could it be that this piece was hidden away? An ex-SA Mann trying to keep an artifact of his old boss? So many unknowns out there. Lloyd
