What's with SS Model 33 daggers beginning to hit the $5,000 mark!

When I purchased my first and only SS EM Dagger 6 years ago I thought I was getting in too late, that I was paying maximum dollar for the piece, and that relative inflation aside, that prices on these had plateaued.

On the one hand I'm glad that I was wrong, but on the other I certainly can't afford to add to the collection now!

Beginning?? Seems like they've passed the 5k mark, and steadily approaching 6-7k for nice conditioned early ones.

Cheers,

Hold onto your seats. I bought and still have a M-33 Boker that I bought in 1969 for $60.00. At the time that was alot of money. SA daggers were $25. and HJ knives were $10. I just can't believe the rather common M-33 is now close to or over $5,000.

I wont pay these outrageous prices .... SS daggers I will only buy from another collector or from Vet's estates at a reasonable price. This nonsense started when Wittmann published his SS book .... All of a sudden SS prices doubled and tripled. The same with SA daggers when word got around that Tom was going to publish an SA book.

Likewise when JR published his book on Railroad Eagles ..... Prices jumped from an average of $350-$400 to $1500 - $2500.

Dealers took advantage of these books to inflate prices to these astronomical levels. Well..... more power to them ..... I ain't paying their stupid prices.

When does publishing a book (which anybody can do).... justify these insane prices???

Just my opinion -

Gordon

It's a vicious cycle- and one that collectors not dealers are responsible for. Nobody wants to take a loss or break even on a piece they've owned when it comes time to liquidate a piece from their collection. That causes prices to rise.

Add to that the "I gotta have it" mind set that many collectors have. That causes prices to rise.

Do dealers "massage" prices? Undoubtedly. Do dealers use the publication of a new reference to raise prices? Yep. But, bottom line, when collectors want to blame someone for rising prices, they need to look in the mirror, for they have control of the market. When in the market for a SS dagger, the choice is clear- either pay the price....or not. If enough people don't buy, prices will come down.

In 25 years of collecting militaria, I've never, ever had a dealer jump over a table, place a gun to my head and force me to buy a collectible.

Most hobbies have their items increase in value....seriuously guys you can't have it both ways...25 years ago a truly mint Bobby Orr rookie card could be easily bought for under $500 a lot of money for a mass produced piece of cardboard...now that sports cards are graded the value of that same rookie card is $2500 to $4000!!!!! I threw mine against a wall at school in 1972 and stuck it on the spokes of my bike with a clothes pin...I sold a G I Joe collection that I invested $3000 in over a two year period for $15,000!!!! I can't even begin to tell you about my Hotwheel collection and Lionel trains...would I rather have a $9000 SS dagger than a mint Dimaggio rookie card...I know what I asign more intrinsic and historic value to...I hope that the prices just keep on going up...you are more likely to find an SS dagger at a garage sale or flea market than a Dimaggio rookie card...I found a nice E Pack SS for $900 4 years ago at a flea market...and two years ago a couple driving to the Max from North Carolina stopped at an antique Mall along the way and found a Himmler and an unground Rohm SS....go figure...cheers, Ryan

When I think years ago of all the SA at shows and not even looking at RZM Big Grin The same for SS, RZM were out of the question.

Hi Ed yes they did..it was written up in this past years Max program...In 1995 I used to stop by a dealer's store up here in the Great White North and routinely snubbed the 6 or 7 RZM SS daggers , some earlier transitional pieces for $900 and $1000....you couldn't give them away...not to mention RZM SAs...they were $150 to $250 maker marked were $400 to $450 back in 1995!!!! dagger prices didn't really take off until the fall of Communism and the introduction of Ebay and the worldwide web....then they became global as did the demand....cheers, Ryan

One large dealer has an early Eickhorn With some chipping to the handle for 7900.00! Wow, I'm glad I bought mine when I did about 4 years ago and I thought 3000.00 was too much!

Good luck on those prices. I offered an Eickhorn SS on the for sale forum a few months ago for $1895. Not mint but not a rat either. No takers. Anyone can ask an insane price. Finding an insane buyer is the problem. Smile

Prices on many items were down at the last SOS...when is the last time anyone saw really nice Luftwaffe overseas/wedge caps for $100!!!!....last Max I bought two in so so condition for $275 from major dealers...at the last SOS I bought two near mint examples for $100 each.....Helmet prices are for the most part down from their high of three years ago....even good camo examples....I have seen really nice Heer officer visors for less than $700.....Heer and Luft daggers seem to be low and stable...it just seems that maker SA in near mint condition and any SS M33 are through the roof....reality will set in by the next Max I am sure...dealers can not afford to sit on inventory forever...even Mr. vLukas reduced his prices on everything by 30% last week...almost everything sold within hours...cheers to all, Ryan

if anyone can cough up a mint example by pack bertram early eick or klaas i have 5grand with your name on it right now, its purely supply and demand, rough examples graying and rusted pitted examples dont shoot through the roof because they are more frequently encountered, if anything is overpriced it is those examples as they will be admired by alot of collectors but to get the oohs and ahs you need the mint stuff, i think the rougher examples should be selling at or around 1k and the truly mint around 8k...

Early 70's, Heers and 2nd Lufts were around 15, SS 33's were about 30 about an average weeks wages, oh yeah I wish I'd kept mine, but I wouldn't pay 3000 for a mass produced dagger, too many other nice things you can get for that.
