Gentlemen,
Bought this knife at the SOS.
The leather appears to be artificial, brown with several "layers". The knife is an early Emil Voos.
Has anyone seen this before or would it be a replacement?
Thanks for any input.
Greetings,
Herman

I can't tell alot by the pics but is it pigskin? I have seen brown earlier straps of pigskin that have the "layered" look. Russ

You could be right again, Russ, this is probably pigskin. Thanks.
I post a few more close-ups, maybe there are other opinions?
Best greetings,
Herman

If you look again you probably will find that this is in fact pressed layered paper. It was also used for belts ,frogs and other items but is usually a late production item.

I have also seen this paper construction on late vintage hangers, notably RAD leader, where it is known I believe as ERSATZ, the german word for substitute (Wotan correct me if I'm wrong)!

And if this is the case, would suggest an earlier maker marked knife married with a later scabbard, or possibly a period replacement of a damaged hanger?

Herman, I dont think that its a replacement. Actually there were periodic shortages of leather resulting for example in the production of 1938 dated laminated material German Police frogs. And vinyl and what is most probably neoprene seen as a substitute material for leather on some items that normally would have been leather. IMO its a very interesting (and desirable) variation. Regards, FP PS: My compliments on your excellent photos!!

Houston, Paul, Fred,
Thanks a lot for your extra comments on this post.
The fact that the strap is brown (and not black) makes me believe that Fred is right and that it is original to this early knife.
Greetings,
Herman
