Hello,

It appears to be a typical pre-war Prussian type tschako BUT I can't tell what that front plate is supposed to be. It looks like gray clay from the photo with no detail. Here is one I have with a typical Weimer period Prussian Landespolizei plate.

The one you picture is missing the chin strap, the kokarde and possible the front plate. Value would be minimal in my opinion, in the $100 range.

many thanks bill! actually it has (part) of the chin-strap but it's broken.... the plate looks
like bad-quality, unfinished zinc that may've had a silver wash at some time but it "washed" off.

sort of a daggie then.

Thanks,

I'm afraid I would need a better shot of the plate to even make a guess. It could be military or police, just can't tell.

David : Right . But it is " SUUM CUIQUE " , which means ' To each his own ' .
The gray finish on the star plate shows that it is a WW I issue for the in-the-field wear.
You might want to look inside the helmet and see if you can find any ink markings concerning a unit and date in black ink , sometimes red .
