Hello,
I was woundering if anyone would know which is the best material to use in a oak display case with a glass front. I have a Minty Sa in one, and two minty lufts in the others. I use a foam backing with a velvet liner and they are sealed from the back with another piece of thin oak plywood and screws. They have been in there for a year now, So far no spottin has poped up. I do use a liguid car wax to protect the blades from humidity and it seems i cannot go 2 weeks without pulling them out to look them over just one more time. But my main concern is will using foam or velvet cause any problems in the future, has anyone run into any problems using these materials.
Thanks in advance Eric Wien

P.S. i will be posting some pics of my small collection in a few days on the new members form when i get the payment for the membership sent in.

I have read that polyurethane is not a good foam to use as it breaks down and "out gasses" Not sure if that is the correct term... Now your is covered with velvet which acts as a barrier but the breakdown of the material is the concern... I hope someone replies as this is a question I have been thinking about recently.

Eric I think you're making a mistake using liquid car wax.

In the plywood backing why not drill holes in it to vent the foam to the outside ?? Just an Idea Cool

Thanks Johnny and Rich for the links, and janjan i'll try some renn wax on a Heer dagger i have.
I think i'll try some of the ideas from the links provided. I like verns method, if he has had no problems in the last 20 years it would be safe to say it's a tried and true method.
Thanks Everyone

Hi Eric,

I think everything has been covered here but I have some of mine in a cabinet that I have made and I also put small bags of 'Silica Gel' (the little bags of crystals you get sometimes when you buy electrical items to cut down on moisture in the air).
Every time I get a new bag of it , I just put it inside the case on the bottom edge.
Thanks, Wendy

Thanks Wendy,
I use the silica bags with my helmets and daggers that i have stored in a tote, it does work very well to wisk up any moisture and humidity. I did try to post some of my display cases but the file exceeded 101kb.
Eric
