Came across this leather helmet. Is it an original 1st model NSKK crash helmet? According to the eagle it could be. However, the strange thing is that the leather ear, neck and chin strap are missing. What do you think? Have they been removed? Is it an original NSKK crash helmet with the 1st style eagle? Any opinions are very welcome! Thanks!

#19 - the straps are missing. Have they been removed? If so, it looks like they have been cut off very precisely. Is that possible?

Hi an absolutely original piece in my opinion. In so far as the absence of flaps is concerned you should be able to determine if they have been removed or if they were never present. No issue either way in so far as originality is concerned. If they were removed it would impact on the value and collector desireability to a large exten. cheers, Ryan

Did crash helmets without flaps exist? I always thought all NSKK crash helmets had these flaps?

If you look at below pic, you can see an edge / selvedge of something that could be the remnant of a leather flap (between liner and outer rim), but it doesn�t look to me that it was cut off. Leather is usually hard to cut and there�s not much space to handle with a scissor.

However, if the flaps have been cut off, the cuts have been done extremely precise and straight. Plus there are stitches over the leather edge, which look period to me (see red circle). That means that the cut off could have been done period. If so, for what purpose?

So if crash helmets did exist without flaps, this could be possibly one? If not, then somebody cut off the flaps very professionally and put some stitches over the remnants.

What would be a reasonable price for this helmet?

A CRASH HELMET WITHOUT A METHOD TO SECURE IT TO THE HEAD IS SELF DEFEATING. EVIDENTLY, SOME ONE NEEDED THE LEATHER RESTRAINING STRAPS FOR ANOTHER PURPOSE. THESE HELMETS ARE FAIRLY COMMON. I WOULD NOT CONSIDER PUTTING ANY MONEY IN TO IT AS EVENTUAL RESALE WOULD BE QUITE DIFFICULT. COLLECT GOOD SOUND COLLECTABLES. JUNK WILL ALWAYS REMAIN JUNK

Bob is correct..not much sense in having something to protect your noodle that won't actually stay on your head!

There were, however, examples made without the neck flap, and they are encountered from time to time..
