Dave,

It was one of the pinned reference threads at the top. Several others dropped off (like all the older threads are doing) and Bill was able to more or less replicate them as he had copies of them in storage in his own PC. They too will disappear in time like all the old threads.

These older threads are all dropping off and it is really pointless to spend time making them since you have said there is nothing you can do about getting more space so the data does not override the buffers. Everyone has mentioned this problem time and time again. You simply do not have enough storage space and older threads disappear no matter how many times they are bumped up.

The WSP thread gone!????? Eek Eek Eek Eek Eek What is the point of posting anything on any thread if we have to keep reinventing the wheel???? Nothing has value, everything is open to dispute again, and we are all worse off then if we simply did our own thing and kept it to ourselves! Repeatedly posting to disappearing threads is simply a waste of time and thus a waste our lives.

It is not the loss of knowledgeable members that will kill this forum, it will be the loss of the accumulate knowledge of this community that will make this forum superfluous! Pretty soon we'll all be able to learn just as much about German edged weapons from YouTube or FaceBook as we're able to find here!!! Frown ~ Ian

Orpo,

This is NOT a question of threads being deleted because of space.

Most or all of the posts made before the new software (2004) are gone because of technical issues. When Vern gets back, I will get him to post the in-depth explanation. He has told me a couple of times, but I did not understand enough to be confident of repeating it here with any accuracy.

When this first happened, he initially thought the posts from the old software could be preserved by adding a new reply. Lots of people put in hard work updating threads. As it turned out that did not work. Anything started before the new software is gone or at risk. That is really bad luck for us.

Posts started since then have not corrupted as far as I know. The only things that go away are:

- Timed out For Sale or Wanted ads. These are deleted by NoBoZos

- Unsupported For Sale ads and the works of the occasional phantom spammer or serial potty mouth. These are removed but not deleted.

I saved a few of the early medal and badge threads by creating a new current topic header and moving content of the old thread to the new header. All you lose is the first post of the old thread and you can save it yourself and recreate it under the new heading before you move the content.

Dave,

I know that no one is purposely deleting old threads because of space. It is simply something mechanical that occurs because the information bucket is full and something has to spill out in order to accomidate new information. The oldest information goes first. As I understand it this is a hardware and software problem related to space. Similar to trying to put 10 pounds of information into a 5 pound bag.

I am not trying to assign blame here, just describe the problem with this missing thread. I know that Bill, as a moderator, was able to reconstruct a couple of these reference threads but I don't know if he has tried Joe's method. Joe's method should work because the old information appears to the computer as new information under a new header. Computers are simply machines and you can fool 'em like Joe has done.
