Hello, a friend brought this to me the other day, but my knowledge of it was zilch, he bought it in Australia and looks to be a German made piece made for export?
The knife folds out and locks into what becomes quite a formidable dagger. He has taken it away again so I only have these pics, but I can give him a phone if needed.
Thanks for any help.
Colin

Colin,

You can edit your posts for 45 minutes after you make them. After that, only a Mod can do that.

Colin--I cleaned it all up for you. I don't think this is an import item. It seems to be more of a weapon than a Hunting piece. Unusual.

Hi Colin,

I've been told that they are called 'barrel' knives. I'd put it 1900 to 1930... I almost bought one from France a few years ago, but the deal fizzled. They are very reminiscent of those large stag folders. I don't know what the use is- but I'd hate to have my hand on that grip in a fight. The first bit of resistance and the grip hand's palm would be toast. I think it may be commercial sailor related.

I would have to agree with Lance, the main part of the scabbard looks to be rawhide, that would definately put it early, cracking knife.

Thanks for the help, he wants to sell this and some other items can anyone help with a ballpark figure on this knife?

I am just going to send him a link to this thread so he can read your helping info for himself.

Thanks for cleaning up the mistakes Houston.
Thanks again all.

Well, I was going to pay around $200 for the one from France before things broke down. It was in better shape bladewise though.

Hey Wetzel,

These types are very cool knifes for many uses. As the caption states, designed by an Admiral for aboard ships. Picture taken from your post. The one shown above also has the anchor. But your right an early one.

Post #157356 is shwing a photo of the opened blade with the detailing "GESETZL. GESCHÜTZT" mark (protected by law, possibly a patent or a design right).
I cannot identyfy the second line which surely is showing up a number.

@ Colin Davie: can the owner of the knife identify the number in question or any wording of this second line mark?

Thanks.
For me it was a sort of fisching knife.
Not fighting....jonction between blade & grip was fragile.
