Yesterday I've found 7 buckles (6 Air-force) and one Red Cross in our POW Camp in North Germany.

The first 3 buckles I've cleaned now.
[LIST]
  • One first model made by Deumer (stamped on the leather tab.
  • One second model made by L&M = Lind & Meyer Oberstein
  • One Red Cross made by JFS but it's denazified.
Tomorrow I'll want to look in this camp again..maybe I've luck again..we'll see.
At first photos of the ground dugs in find condition.

It depends on Junker's nationnality ... Reading his post I don't know if "our" stands for American operated or German operated POW camp since it can be either one I guess.
You are indeed correct if it was a German operated. In case of an American operated we could expect anything been found at the location. Am I wrong?

I'm sure he is reffering to a US ran PWTE, (there were many). I spent two years every chance I had metal detecting a US ran POW camp behind my Kaserne while stationed in Babenhausen Germany (PWTE-20A) in the late 1980's. The topography was basically unchanged. SS, Heer, Luft, KM, SA, HJ were all well represented. Between myself and one other guy we dug over 1000 ID discs, thousands of uniform buttons, and every other type of metal accouterment including buckles, badges (some POW camp made) etc. The garbage pits contained the best junk including preserved leather and even paper on occasion. They camp helpd up to 30.000 German pow's at its peak. Many were systematically starved to death throughout the POW camps from the summer of 1945-1946. it is estimated that over 1 million German pow's died while in pow camps throughout Germany while in US, British and French hands. There is an excellent book about this published in Canada. It is a fine analysis of the facts. Banned from US publication. For the life of me I cannot remember the title or author.

By the way hundreds of the ID discs we found in the Bbenhausen enclosure were "halved".

These POW camps had been under English Administration and you can find relicts of all units also the Waffen-SS.
I've found there two ID tags and two SS-buckles.
Yesterday we had been there again and we've found three Luftwaffen-buckles two Sieper and one Deutschbein.
@DEM...very nice finds ...would you kindly say where exactly is the location..perhaps I can search there for relics.
If you're using google earth you can send me a placemark by E-Mail
Here again a photo ..yesterday in our Luftwaffen-buckle forest.

Thank you Junker for the follow up. It confirms I was indeed right to ask this question. How were the two SS buckles you found (any particular marking)?

But I think it is a rare one.
look at the roundness like an egg..
    Maker is Deumer Lüdenscheid.
The leather tab I've conserved with a special oil.
and with original Wehrmachts-Thread I've sewn it again.

I dont know the author but I think the name of the book is "Other losses" or Unaccounted losses..in reference to the records kept at the camps which set forth the reasons for deaths.numbers..and listed those who were starved to death under this heading..I saw a very good documentary on this as well..I believe it did happen and a pretty shameful thing.
