One of my collector pals has a aluminum Luftwaffe unit marked to the JG3. Everything is in great shape except the blade. Their is no platting left and it appears naval jelly was used to remove corrosion. He claims the blades were made like this in the latter war years. I dont buy it. Because I have seen plenty of Luft aluminum swords with a bright nickel finish on the blade. He also wanted $850 for it which I thought was too much. Opinions?

Too much in my opinion. Lakesidetrader recently had an Exc++ early nickel SMF for sale on his site for $895.00. This piece also had a Mint- blade.

Way too much. Probably worth around $500 in that condition.

Thanks, Blademan

Another note the seller tried to justify the price saying since the sword was unit marked. This raised the cost by 40% which is a new one to me. I'm mostly familiar with unit marked Lugers. And 20% mark up is the accepted norm. But that is subject to change depending on how rare the unit mark is. Unfortunately people are now faking unit marks. The last one I saw was on a perfect 1908 Navy Luger. Now its not so perfect. Kalvin you know the seller of this Luft sword.

Dow, IMHO your collector friend is basically clueless (Im being kind here, if it was someone I didnt particularly care for the language would be stronger), and I would pass on it at a fraction of what he wants.

First, the latest (end of production) Luftwaffe swords had pot metal mounts not aluminum. And unit marked is probably earlier than later. So much for He claims the blades were made like this in the latter war years.

And second, who wants a blade which has been naval jellied?? When correct original ones are available - which includes the next guy in line if you ever want to sell it?? Friend or not, I would walk away without a second thought. Regards, FP
