I need a bit of help on this one as I have not seen a knot quite like it, the cords are 23cm which would indicate a luft knot but the ball is much longer than usual and the slide is massive, I know that it is original and presume it is an early luft knot perhaps before they were standardized somewhat.

Cheers

Gary

Gary I'm pretty sure it's not a luft. portepee but it may be for another type dagger other than German.

Hi Ed

You might be right, I'm not sure, the fact that the cord is 23cm's is a big coincidence though. It's been tied on something as the wear is condusive with other knots I have seen. I know there were some very early army portepee's similar in shape but obviously with a longer cord.

Like other Lufts/Armies/Navies,just another variation. There were lots of portepee makers.
I mean lots. One little town in Bavaria,Weissenburg had literally dozens of
small makers.Even now there are still several
makers there.

IMO that is one of the newer fakes or for some other post war dagger. IMO the construction is poor, much too different, and of a lower quality than any period piece.

Well we do have a wide range of opinions, I can say that I am 100% sure this is not a new fake, I have also not heard of a post war dagger that uses a bullion knot like this but I also know I have not seen everything and you guys might be right, maybe one of you European dagger collectors can think of a dagger it may be related too.
I personally think it's a genuine knot of the 3rd Reich period, quite what it is for I cannot say but my gut instinct still tells me it's for a luft.

Thank you for your opinions that is of course my reason for first posting it.

I would vote for not German made... but perhaps made for German. A Luft officer stationed in Romania perhaps?

Cannot say anything about the posibility of a foreign knot but due to quality, appearance and certain minute details (waving, threads, proportion, use if certain wire) I dont think it is for any german edged weapon 33-45.

The string to pull the sides in around the the dot is lost. This may account for the miss shape. A picture next to a reg Luft knot may yield you more opinions....
