I know that these are becoming more "textbook" and accepted by collectors as an upgraded SS mans dagger.
What would this sell for in the open market today?

I always thought that chained SS daggers were not maker marked,is that not an accepted benchmark. Regards,Ivan.

I for one am comfortable with these field upgrades. And I would be proud to have that beautiful example in my own collection. Fine craftmanship trumps "textbook" for me in this case. jim

I'm also comfortable with MM daggers in the chained version. The boker is the upgrade not the scabbard in my opinion!

I agree, a very nice dagger, especially in a 36 scabbard.

1936 chained SS daggers having a trade mark are 100% legitimate pieces which I have previously bought directly from veterans.
I have a like chained SS as the one shown having a Robert Klaas trade marked blade and a better condition with mine having about 100% of the scabbard finish and I have it priced at $8,900.00.

Yes craftsmanship does trump textbook. That is why a early Boker does not belong in a plated scabbard.Notice how the center scabbard band does not fit the scabbard shell very well at all.You will not see that in a early nickel silver M36 scabbard.I would always wonder at what time was it switched. They will always be parts daggers to me.

FYI this came from a WW2 Vet "as is"
I bought it from an older man whom bought it off the vet directly.

The only thing for sure is that it is not the original configuation of the dagger.Maybe the vet saved it from the treads of a weapon crushing tank and put it together when he was in Germany?.Also why is it that every piece that comes from a veteran is beyond reproach?I have no doubt that these daggers were put together by the original owners sometimes but I will not buy one at a premium.I find it a draw back to the piece because one will never know when it was done. This is just my opinion.I am sure there are many people out there who will gladly pay top dollar for a parts dagger.

Personally I would prefer to see that Boker in the original scabbard & as it is it is neither one thing or the other JMO.
Beautiful dagger though!

Zorro, I will refer to Wittmanns SS book page 148-149. Rock solid evidence that there was upgrading of service daggers to M36 type. So you are somewhat correct, these are put -to-gether, by German NCO's and offices.

This to me is in all probability a period upgrade which is light years away from something done post war to deceive. If you don't like this you probably wouldn't like an M1 Carbine that was legitmately arsenal upgraded at some time either. Or how about someone upon being promoted upgrading the rank insignia on their uniform?? Jim

Why is it OK for a M36 to have the wrong dagger in it but not for a early SS or SA in a plated scabbard.Guns are good examples a Luger loses much value if any part is not original and it does not matter who replaced it.The reason SS daggers are Ok because they are worth to much not to be.That is why it is very likely could be put together in the last 70 years. We will never know who upgraded your dagger.IMO

Reading some articles about German items after the war, when the German surrendered ALL their arms (daggers too) the GI placed all the "stuff" in a large pile and ran tanks over the items to prove a point. Some GI grabbed daggers and made blades fit scabbards as a war trophy. Over the years I have owend 2 M36 with early RZM blades. Both bought from vet family members. I have also onwed a Bertram Reinh inserted in a mid period M36 Scabbard. Again from a vets son.
Sr. Collectors please share your experiences and thoughts.

I have GR Eickhorn in type II scabbard with nickle silver fittings (also Eickhorn - thick throat, you know). Everything fits in colour and shape and I'm very happy with it

Eickhorn style motto positioned bit lower - typical for Eickhorn Rhms. See the thicker scabbard throat.

Maker mark factory ground off, but any doubts about the maker? I compared the the grip's shape and the insignia with some well know Eickhorn Rhms, they were identical.

I would say you are correct, I have seen other SS and SA's by Eickhorn with #'s stamped on the bottom of the crossguards.

If( I )was going to spend this kind of money on a (vet) ss dagger it would have to have no tradmark And no scabbard upgrade . (just me) Much easier to sell when the time comes.. FYI most good daggers came from vets...
