Hello Robert,

Here is a knife with the same reverse blade marking : "1939".

The diamond and the grip plates are the regular ones though. Hanger is the period plastic version and the reverse is marked "ges. gesch."

Best greetings,

Herman

Hello Paul,

quote:
the reverse is marked "ges. gesch."

That stands for "gesetzlich geschützt", in englisch: "registered patent/design/trademark"

Best greetings,

Herman

The HJ on top seems to have a hanger of imitation leather, no? The one showed by Herman has the plastic hanger I already saw before. What's the theory behind these variants? I always believed I had to link these plastic hangers on late war daggers (1942). I'm a bit confused now Confused

Excellent observation, Theo/Wim!

I understand that you are confused Smile

I had the same feeling when I found the knife that I show here.

There are different possible explanations in my opinion:

- The "1939" knife got mixed up with a later plastic hanger scabbard.
- Plastic hangers where used as early as 1939.
- A "1939" marked blade was used to assemble a 1941-42 knife.

Personaly I believe that the 3rd option is mostly possible, because the knife is made with an alloy hilt and even zinc like rivets that you normaly do not see on 1939 knifes.

About Robert's knife, I would like to see some closeups of the scabbard, from what I can see, the hanger appears to be pigscin with a replacement snap. I also would like to see better pictures of the grip plates.

Best greetings,

Herman

Now pigskin; that make sense. I believe that's often found on late HJ's, no?
What about the painted HJ emblem? Stippling an opaque tomato red enamel I know as good. Also painted HJ membership pins, ok fine. But was it also produced with the clips for mounting on a HJ knives?

Regards, Wim
