If that is an M43, definitely bogus. They were not made in 1940 (order authorising them is dated 11 June 1943). The only such peaked field caps were the mountain caps, and they had a shorter peak, slightly different construction, and usually at least a partial leather sweatband inside.
Even the peakless version of this cap was not produced until July 1942.

You may have saved me a lot of $$$ Thank you for the 411 David! A 1940, M43 or M42? was there a M40? I had/have reservations about this cap myself, but I am still "drawn" to it. Oh well, I seek on. Cheers, Pauli
