Thanks ,Guess the vets daughter lied about it or the vet put a fake post war decal on it!Here is one more pic,a little clearer, looks like breast area was touched when decal was wet and smudged.

I really think you need to post the whole helmet inside and out , if its got a fake liner or fake paint then the decal; will be suspect too .Rob

Thanks,I believe the decal is good because it came vets daughter, but could have messed with it but I doubt it, I cant get a good pic that shows the color, its not white but has a tan color.I wet my finger and rubbed over the decal,it didnt budge,is that a good test?will post pics of helmet when I get a chance.

i think the best test of a decal is that if you closed your eyes and rubbed your finger over the border, you would not feel or notice a ridge,,,even with your eyes open, try this,as the decals "****ed down" to the surface and there should be no tell-tale demarcation between the decals border and the helmet shell,,all should feel extremely smooth as you transition from shell to decal and back again,,,

Thanks!I tried the feel test, cant really feel an edge, seems stuck pretty tight, but I guess you can fake about anything with enough effort and knowledge of originals.

I am on the fence here. At first glance I think it's a bad one, but would need to know the maker of the shell and also some interior photos as Rob Sutton asked for. It could just be a worn eagle - but will wait for your reply.

Ok here is the deal, the decal is on the front of a police/civil helmet with salt&pepper shaker vents. One of the holes on each vent did not get punched out all the way.Iam thinking some kind of last ditch put together, the liner is canvas with inside consisting of a felt band and stiff treated cardboard and cork buffers held in by regular rivits. This cardboard is amazingly strong. What do you think now?Got from vets daughter second hand.I know the germans were making holsters out of stiff paper and cardboard because of shortages of leather and other materials.

decal is probably legit,,i have seen other helmets with weird placement of decals on front as well,,,although from first glance, the eagle does appear to be a good copy,it would be hard to refute the vet purchase fact, once removed,,i guess its possible, though remote,,,that the vet found a copy decal and put it on the front,,still,,i have changed my mind regarding it's authenticity,,

I think before you start commenting on decals lets get the maker of the helmet first imo. What do you recon on this maker?

the poster was soliciting comments on the authenticty of the decal,,not "guess who the manufacturer of the helmet is"..it makes no difference to me who made the helmet if the decal is proven no good...

Yes im sorry if i came across wrong. I was trying to learne what decals go with what manufacture to a shell to get a better understanding for myself. eg ET Q ect ect. Imo if we can grasp that, then i think decal recognition would be a far lot easier to understand. Again sorry you missundertood me did not mean to rile you on this issue.

Slingshot, one problem is that unless the helmet has been untouched since the day it left the factory, not refinished in the field with another manufacturers decal, it is hard to tell without looking for manufacturing stamps.
Even some original helmets, untouched since day one may not have the 'correct' decal on it.
Btw, you can't rile these guys, they are just regular Joes talking German militaria!!

no offense taken Slingshot,,,you do have a point but as Doug has said,,lots of variations,,,depot restored, field modified etc,,sometimes makes identification almost irrevelent..

No offence taken but i think naw german helmet collecting is finnished . Long gone and a thing of the past. I only have 2 originals in 28 years of collecting.
