The ashtray is a very handsome piece of stone work. The main problem I have with it is the engraved medallion in the center. The title of Reichsjagermeister engraved on the bottom has been done by a novice engraver. The miester part has the letters to close together and when compared to the rest of the engraved title the letters "i s t e" are slightly shorter than the rest of the letters besides being to close. I wouldn't think Goering would appreciate a less than perfect engraving or that any would present a piece with an obvious flaw in the spacing and size of the letters to General Goering. Any competent engraver would render the inscription on paper first to assure the fit of the inscription. It appears the "meister" part is squeezed together.
Just an observation from an artist that has engraved a few copper plates to make intaglio art prints.

Robert,

Thanks for posting these photos. Are you sure it's an ashtray? Does it have any hallmarks or other markings?

I agree with Steve that the engraving spacing is not perfect, but I don't think that reason alone is enough to draw a conclusion on authenticity.
