The back side top"You were my consolation in the dark hours" back side bottom "I discovered that as a soldier" Inside the little window you can see a funny picture showing a happy soldier riding on a goat ,waving farewell to an officer in the upstairs window of a cottage. A woman is pulling on the goats tail to try and stop him from leaving. inside caption reads."Where is the reserve going? HOME! Mr.Feld First.out on the goat. The girl wants him at home! Thanks to my good friend Ken Lewis for help with the translations.

The screw off top is a shot glass and when you set it down the eagle holds the shot glass while you pour! Can anyone explain the joke about the goat?Any other comments are welcome!I just like the fact that it seems to be a "Light hearted" piece. Thanks Geoff. Big Grin

that is very very nice flask, for the non beer swillers. Of course they were the minority in the german army. So their flask are much rarer. Nice item. I have one fellows beerstein, flask and pipe...so he was the fellow that did really enjoy his time after he got out...
Prosit,
Roland.

The legend of the Ram, or goat or ‘Bock’ is old and amusing. The legend as presented in Major John L. Harrell (RET.)’s book on regimental steins goes something like this:

In the stables of some regiments, a ram was kept because of its strong unpleasant odor. The odor was strong enough to keep a soldier on guard duty from slipping into the stables for a quick snooze between checks of the guard posts.

With this preamble it seems evident that some soldiers would go to any length to discourage a ‘clinging’ female and some females would got to any lengths, including enduring the stench of the goat, to hold on to their soldier lover.

So, true or not, “that’s my story and I’m sticking to it”…
