Here is a couple of pictures of my approx 7X12 foot state flag. It has no white bunting and has 4 evenly spaced metal clips on the eagle side of the flag. Would anybody have any idea what this type of flag was used for or how it was flown since there is no rope?

Recent (non-period) nylon straps attached for use of the flag at some skin head camp? Maybe?!?!? IMO

Any stamped markings or words anywhere?

Don't hate the player, HATE the game!Wink

Sorry. But this flag is 100% original. No glow and no markings. I will wait for opinions from somebody who knows.

That last remark was not supposed to be the way it sounded. What I meant was this is not a skin head flag and am sure there are others on this site who have probably seen one like it!

Since the eagle looks too close to the left border, i would wager that if you let out the end, you will find either a cut rope tunnel or an unfinished edge..

Alot of these flags were found (some unfinished..) at wars end..

Thanks Kursk. I will check it out. But why then would they have went to all the work to sewn on the 4 thick pieces of cloth and then attach the clips?

SSman, many vets didn't have the time or care about how they got the flag down. Most of the time they cut it off.. It could just be that yous has an attachment system put on by one of the newer postwar owners so they could display it without the dreaded tacs!...

That’s what I meant! Post war application of hangers/clips so that this flag could be flown!
I said skinhead just as a generic descriptor as to a plausible need for this flag to be flown!?!? Who really knows? Not me! Sorry! My Bad…….
All I know is that if I flew my flags here in Mississippi I would be in trouble of sorts!!!!

I checked the flag over good and I see nothing that looks to have been added later. Done a burn and blacklight test and everything checks out positive! I have seen this type of flag with metal clips but only had one on each end and of course they weren't this big either. Guess maybe I have a Delta flag made in the 70's

SSman..i think the flag is original..just been 'modified' somewhat..please take a pic of the end laid out flat to show one of the clips..that could help to see why it was done..

my opinion is the straps and hooks are original to flag.theres a possibilty there postwar but why. and in missippi, that rebel state shouldnt care about what flags you fly. at least they had the guts not to change the state flag Big Grin

Wedgepig. I know that this flag is 100% good. This was a gift to me from an old vet back in my hometown of Wagner, South Dakota. He told me he took this flag down from inside a building in a small town in Germany. That was years ago and I can't remember what the name of the town was. He never mentioned taking this flag to a seamstress and having the tabs added. Like you why would somebody that wanted a souviner go to all the trouble of having that done to an old nazi flag?

I like it too..most likely done for ease of removal from a hoist..either on a boat or on a flagpole..

Sometimes you see this canvas material as the bunting on the flags..

I believe the flag is 100% correct hooks and all! I have one with the same type clips and material purchased directly from a veterans family today. The ladies that had it hated it and said it made them sick to their stomachs just looking at it. They wouldn't let me open it up. it was folding in a cotton twill type flag carrying holder. i base this opinion on observation and not wild guess-work. Highly unlikely that it was done postwar. These must have a special purpose but i'm not sure what that was. They are factory machine sewn on and the hooks look nickel plated.

THIS is a State Service Flag with swivel clips like yours SSMan. My flag has three hooks. One in the center along the edge and one in each corner. This flag was with the same family since WWII. It belonged to 2 Sisters in their 80's. Their cousin brought it back from WWII as a souvenir and gave it to the Father of the Two woman. Flags with this fastening configuration may have a specific use but they are not skin head modifications!

DEM. It makes me feel a lot better knowing that somebody else has a flag like mine! I knew mine was the real deal because it was given to me by a vet in my hometown. Now that another one surfaced maybe people can see that they were actually period made.

It seems that both these flags were vet items so I really don't think there can be any dispute about the originality of them?

Thank you for the comment. You got a nice looking state flag too.

I did remove it by covering those stupid words with black fabric paint. I'll post pics of it when i can.
