I'm trying to figure out why the nametag is on the inside of the liner on my helmet.
There is really no logic in having your name inside the liner.I'm going to throw out a few suggestions that i have.

Can we assume the nametag was applied at the factory and that the helmet was shipped/delivered to Mr.Backhaus who was in the III Lehr Geschwader in 1938?
Is this the nametag of just any regular Joe?? Or is it a helmet ment for someone a little more special than the average EM? The nametag appears to me as one of quality and
is next to the school stamp.Doesn't this indicate that it was done at the factory
before the shoestring was applied and tied?

The most common thing is of course to find the name in the rear skirt of the helmet or on the liner outside and visible. You pick your(size)helmet and then you name it.
And if you get a lid your size ,would you untie the shoestring and put a nametag on the inside?? it doesn't make sense to me.Maybe it does to some of you?

I'm open to suggestions here.Am i on to something or am i just rambling?
I would love it if someone can tell me that the III Lehr Geschwader was located at Paderborn.

Please feel free to speculate and give me your opinion regarding the nametag and placement of it.There was more stamps inside the liner.Maybe i should take pictures of them too?
I think it was some numbers and a letter somewhere in there. One of the numbers was obviously the size and then there was another number and a letter. If they mean anything i will check it out.

Thanks.

Ulf.

I have encountered lots of name tags like this in helmets.
I think it was just a way for the soldier to mark his helmet.
I have seen were the name was painted on the skirt and a matching tag similar to yours either glued or sewn into the liner.
I have also seen the tags with names and unit on them.
I think it pretty much comes down to the individual soldier or his unit and the abvailability of tags.

A lot of times you will see unit marking for schools, were the soldier is issued the helmet during his school and he turns the helmet back into the unit when the school is complete. He would then be issued a helmet from his assigned unit. In this case if the unit is a school he may have been assigned to the school as cadre/instructor.
The helmet did not leave the factory with this tag in it.

very nice DD Luft, no doubt about that one.

Ulf,

Very attractive helmet.

Search for information at:
http://www.Lexikon-der-wehrmacht.de

go to : Truppenteile/Einheiten/Gliederungen and then scroll to "Lehr geschwader" (III Lehr Geschw.)

Thanks Matt. And thank you Thijs for that suuuper link.

The strange thing is that when clicking on Lehr Geschwader II, there was a lot of info about Kampfgeschwaders taking part in the occupation of Norway.

Thanks Cody.My german isn't that good yet.It appears that III Lehr geschw. was merged with II in early 1940.Early enough for Operation "Weserubung" , the invasion of Norway.
It all makes sence to me now.How this helmet ended up near a small military airstrip at Hønefoss,Norway. Big Grin

Fabolous stuff for sure.
