Dutchman, I'm wondering if it's because of eBay's over-zealous, witch-hunt policy against TR items that so many of these innocuous items are left? I'm sure that buckles and matchboxes from this period are considered "safe items," that is, not likely to ruffle anyone's sensitive feathers and get deleted from their listings? Or do you think they're just the latest influx of crap reproductions? You could post some photos here for discussion if you feel that something's bad or questionable. There are lots of knowledgeable collectors on these forums who will gladly lend you a hand if you need it. Normally, imperial matchboxes and common, em-type buckles aren't high-dollar sellers, so that fakers would have to sell a sizeable mountain o' junk just to break even ..? However, as with any other German military collectible play it safe and check everything as closely as possible. If you're convinced of originality, I'd say it might be a good time to pick up a few nice variants while there's a good bounty to choose from, if one is so inclined ... Cheers! Bill

Dutchman, These look like perfectly good examples to me, is there something in particular that bothers you about them? Since I don't know your level of experience with these, I'd say several good references on imperial belt buckles would cover both areas nicely. I know for certain there are many variants to be found and studied in the crown designs, close attention should be paid to this detail, as well as the different city and organizational crests. Matchbook covers are still plentiful and most likely still very inexpensive, you could build a fantastic collection for the cost of one ordinary TR dagger that's in good shape. I imagine almost every German frontline soldier who smoked had one of these or something similar to it, to protect their precious matches. Those, and a good bit of good tobacco must have been very special items in the days of trench warfare. Cold coffee and vittles just won't do ... Best of luck! Bill
