A friend of mine has send me a scan of a photo in his collection and I asked for permission to post it here.

This is a cuff-title I have never heard of before. " HJ Div. "



The photo is a wartime original, there is no doubt.

It seems like a "selfmade" cuff-title, but besides that it was against any regulations, what sense would it make ? There was only the " Hitlerjugend" cuff-title for the 12th division, nothing else as far as I know.
It makes no sense for me to wear a CT that didn't exist.

I would like to help but I also have never seen this title anywhere before. When the photo is original as you mentioned I would say it is a self organized title that sometimes was done. We know it well, there are very often no regulations for private photo studio potraits.
The title also is not in the BEVO nor known RZM style.

I was thinking the other day... we've seen some strange photos coming out of photo studios and I was curious if those studios had all this crazy insignia, etc. and would use it in their photos? Sounds crazy but you never know... this youngster comes into a studio and he is assigned to the 12. SS-Panzer-Division but doesn't wear a cuffband... so the studio whips this thing out and sticks it on his sleeve. There has to be an answer for some of these strange studio portraits that we see.

Possible scenario: this was a member of the HJ division. His cufftitle had not arrived in time for his photo shoot. He obviously wanted to show off his SS insignia. So, someone threw together a cufftitle just for this pic.

Hi Bob - I don't think so. You can see where the band is sewn into the sleeve at the seam. I could probably do that today with photoshop, but it is pretty subtle for a guy with a white pencil in the 1940s. The letters also appear to follow the folds in the fabric. Think of some of the KC recipient photos where it was added in white pen and ink to an existing studio photo.

A better bet is either field made or sent to the front by a sweetheart with needlework skills to fill a supply gap. Since it appears to be sewn right into the seam of the jacket sleeve, it looks permanent to the jacket and not slipped on for the photo.
