Picked up this little beauty. Has a fine jeweler's inscription across the top that is tough to see but it translates to German Antler Contest 1909.I think this was a National competition. There is also a Roman numeral 9 for ninth place. It is hollow and a two piece riveted construction. Maker marked on the back and 800 with silver proofs. It was gilted at one time-a small amount remains. I like it a lot.

Houston, Great find there, that's the first time I've seen a roe-buck skull used in place of a capital-Hirsch in the design, beautiful. That and the decorative flourishes really make it for me.  It seems that the time-frame 1900-1914 produced some of the best looking civilian awards, prizes and decorations to be found. Maybe that long stretch of peace gave German craftsmen more time to devote their energies to the job at hand? There's just so much that's reflected in a little work of art like this... Billy, These little babies were meant to hang on the antler trophy itself, usually about three to four inches in length. Gary has a collection of these awards going full blast. Dang! Another area to spend more time and money on!  Bill

Gents, This is one of Gary's awards that dates from 1929 for a Jagdausstellung, not a Geweih or trophy-antler exhibit. This has to be one of the nicest examples I've seen of these so far, the patina is just about perfect and has that even black/blue look about it. The reverse is hallmarked Silber 990. I've been fiddling around with JPEG compressors so I'm keeping my fingers crossed this image will turn out... here goes!  Bill

Thanks for posting them Bill, I really like this trio, always got my eye out for more of them as well.
Houston, the small badge with the 25 underneath is I'm sure a Nurnberg Jagdschutz Badge, it might not have it on it but I have seen this design before with the double antler. I will try and find something in my files to confirm this.

Here's an early hunting/trophy plaquette in bronze that will be one hundred years old come next year. The Germans called the city
Troppau, though it was located in Moravia and also known as Opava. It was a prosperous market center and was also earlier the capital of Austrian-Silesia.
The design is one of the finest representations of Saint Hubertus that I've ever seen, the old boy looks a dashing chap, a real Erol Flynn type!
The soft bronze patina-colors add subtle zest and depth to this nice award ... hope you might enjoy it and best regards!
