guys -

I recently found at a store what's for me an odd bayonet.

the round attachment - the part that fits over the barrel then turns onto a lug - looks 19th century; similar setup as on civil war rifles.

but the blade doesn't hang down 2 inches below; it comes right off the bottom portion - AND it's "scooped out" along its length - not any kind of fuller, more a spoon-shaped trough, ending about 8 inches downstream in a pointed tip.

why this curvature? prototype digging too? note I said "trough," not "trowel. it's only as wide as a normal bayonet. I found nothing on the 'net.

sorry no pix for now.

sound US? British? mr. jerry come in!
thanks

the "socket" length is about 4" long and the hole is for a large caliber muzzle, maybe .70

wish I cd. answer more, mr. jerry. didn't check it too carefully (there was some fine bladed eye-candy to be oogled nearby. then I had to leave.)

but it was just ordinary steel "in the white" showing no signs of ever having a finish and looking at least a hundred years old.

I'll try to make some pix this weekend. it's really strange-looking....

thanks for the interest. hope you can sort it!

was there a locking ring on the muzzle socket?

There really was not that many different types of early bayonets, so we should be able to figure it out!

I think there was a locking ring. I'll get those pix if the guy's open this weekend.

I'd 1st thought, hmmm maybe field-modified but it looked too "factory."

stay tuned.
