A little assistance is requested from my fellow bayonet collectors.

Joined the Forum yesterday and this is my first posting.

Like Richie B (30 january 2008) i have also a bym bayonet but not as listed by the factory Genossenshaft Maschinenfabrik, Ferlach-Kärnten, Ostmark(Austria) 41-44 but 40. Is this a rare one?

Bayonet marked “bym” and 29976 over 150
Blade back - 40
Pommel WaA 76
Scabbard reverse - “bym” 40
Scabbard front - 29976 over 150
Scabbard end is marked at one side but i can't read it.

Your comments please.

Regards,

Willem K.

bym ones are rarer than for example asw ones...but not very rare... you can find often.

the numbers are matching...this is very fine.

Important is the condition... new, used or worse?

bym is a pretty rare marking for 1940. Yours being one of the last made in this year.
bym41 are more common to find, then bym42 is the rarest, then bym43 and bym44 are rare.

If it's '44 dated, I need it!

Welcome to the forum Willem! I agree 100% with Arnaud that bym 40 is rarely seen. I have owned hundreds of K98k bayonets and never a bym 40 matching. Of course many people know that 1940 is the year that Germany went from uncoded Manufacturer markings to letter codes. That, attrition, and other unknown factors have made this a hard to find bayonet. Early Ferlach made bayonets have always been elusive for me! Hope this helps!
