Here are my darkest gripped SA's and the light Kober for comparison. The F Herders look almost like SS in your hand. Cheap thrills! (relativly speaking)

Mark... if the Herders had a black painted scabbard, do you think they could be passed as marine SA's?

Anyone else think this could be a possibility?

On the lighter grip one, it has an interesting grip fitting to lower crossguard, very similar to the one Skyline posted in this thread:

Scott, I don't think the F Herders are anything but regular SA's upon close inspection.

Now on the 'blonde' Kober, the lower crossguard does have a lower and flatter upper side than I have seen on other makers. That in itself is interesting. I just took it apart and the lower crossguard is marked with a P on one side facing the tang and on the other side...facing the tang (very strange) is a large K with a small circle with an x in it off to the side. The wooden grip is marked r y on the top with a 7 pointed star on the other side of the top, The bottom of the grip is marked with the single number 4.

Fascinating! From all appearances, it was never a brown grip as no remnants of brown are in the grip center hole or the "ledges" of the wood where you would see 'work'.

The upper grip fitting is marked with the same circled x, the number 7 and a large K on the opposite side of the tang hole. I do not want to clean it too much inside so far so I could possibly be not seeing some of the marks as crystal clear as I would like.

Anybody ever see one like this with these markings?

Hi Mark. I owned a Kober a few years back.It was marked on the grip.Posting some pics that i still have.

If you look upside-down it looks like an r
The crossguards were marked inside with two K's.One of them inside an oval.Both crossguards were marked like that.

If you look closely you can see a small nr. 2 inside one of the encircled K's.

Now , why did i sell that schweeet Kober??

For what its worth-the original specs for the SA dagger printed and published in "The cold steel weapons of the SA,the SS and the NSKK of the NSDAP"by Niederhofer say that --The SA grip is to be stained brown.

This is another opinion thing-some believe and some don't or are suspicious. I am suspicious. It seems that almost all of these blonde grips are in mint condition with none of the usual little nicks and dents. Have they been refinished? Another thing is that I don't remember seeing any of these in the old days before they became "popular" As Craig likes to say-"Go figure"

The one I showed in the earlier thread is not post war, not enhanced and 100% real. It is also not the yellow colored "blonde" of an enhanced grip.

Yep. I bought one advertised as such at the first Max Show live auction back when it was in St. Louis. At the time, I paid the ungodly sum of $350 for it. Remember, this was when a nice and I mean nice, early SA went for $165-$200. I was pretty happy with the purchase until I noticed that most F. Herders are very dark. It's been my exerience that many H. Herders are as dark too. I agree with kingtiger that they are just normal SA's- my unfortunate Max show purchase happened to be a NSKK.

One of the dark F Herders shown will be with me at the SOS. Like a boll weevil..."lookin' for a home"!
