I just agreed to buy this for $700. Hope I did well. These are the pics I was sent. The blade marks are grease that has been on the dagger since the seller got it from his uncle in 1961. The front of the Scabbard looks a little rough but the back looks good and there is a small dent to the lower fitting and the ball is slighly dented. This will be the first time in any collection. I did a google search and no daggers have been found. The only thing that pulled up was some comments here about them. The Gau mark is Wm. I saw that Dave started a thread about Gau marks but there was nothing filled in for Rob. Giersch.

It's a 7 on the McSARR list. I have seen a couple of them but none in good shape. Interesting hanger... Smile

Hi Dave
Thanks for posting the MM. The link in the reference section wasnt working and I wanted to see the MM. Is you Motto frosted or burnished? I am told the grease has been on there since at least 1961 and maybe even when it was acquired by the vet. Any idea how I did on price?

What do you guys think about dents to the scabbard or ball? I usually would not by one from a dealer that way but I am buying this one as it was found out of the woodwork, there soemthing fun about buying directly from the family.

I picked up the dagger. Its interesting to note that the ball chain in the pic has the exact patina as the fittings and is Non magnetic. Could this be a period Nickel chain??? Although on the bead clasp is the word "bead" on one side and "chain" on the other??

Heres the pics...Its weird but the actual edge of the blade does not appear to have sharpening marks (though it does have a sharper edge) but in a little from the edge are swirls...

I don't think I have seen those marks before where the edge was not super sharp. Strange.

Overall, you did good. I think that maker is under-rated as a "7" ........ Just try finding one.

Lastly, these daggers were all hand finished and it is my experience that when you feel the edge, some do feel feel sharper than others.

I looked at the edge under a very high powered loop and the edge is ragged. SO it must have been sharpened however on the blade face close to the edge there doesnt appear to be and grinding marks. Where these ever period sharpened? What do you thing about the chaion being non magnetic and the same patina as the fittings?

I think that if you do a bit of research you will finf that the type of chain you show has been around for many years. Mostly used to turn on lights and lately fans

Hi DAve
I am familiar with that style of chain. My question is that its non magnetic and has the exact same patina as the nickel fittings. If it were stainless steel it should not have a patina. If it was steel it should be rusty and it were aluminum I dont thinkn it would have the same patina as nickel.
