Hello,

I'm new on this area of the forum, I'm normally a Dagger & Sword guy Wink

But reading through Johnson and Wittmann's books I still haven't really figured out the PSS bayonet and why it's named as such.

Can anyone elaborate on its designation as "SS" and which unit(s) wore this?
Portepee, would that be police or SS or could it be either of them?
Are there any period photo's of this in use with SS units?

Sorry for all these questions, but I'm very keen to learn more about this.

The SS in this case means special purpose. No one knows for sure what that special purpose might be.There are speculations but thats all. There are no photos of it in wear that are known. There is no real basis for the idea that it is SS or that it ever was carried by the SS. Correct knot as far as we know would be the two regular police knots. It could correctly have an SS bayonet knot just like any police bayonet if the member was also a member of the SS as many policemen were. Dealers like to say its SS when they offer it for sale-kinda like a "funeral" dagger IMO Roll Eyes

SS Bayonet

I agree with Houston, The Bayonet that you are talking about is not a so called SS Bayonet. Many dealers have put an SS portapee on this bayonet so as to enhance it's value. It is a very good and valuable bayonet in it's own right; however, it is not SS issued.

Thanks Houston.

I was wondering why this had become an SS-related bayonet, and I think you answered that very clear!

Have anyone done any studies on the floral pattern applied to the PSS bayo and compared with etchings/engravings on other third-reich pieces?

There is no doubt the etchings are original-and the bayonet is listed in period police manuals-but its purpose is not explained. I found an Honor shooting prize bayonet with similiar etchings that you can find on this forum--but I don't see any reason to study the etch pattern.
