Yea, that's a tough one to gauge from the photos. However, clearly the grip button indent has been messed with. I can't be certain, but i'd guess you're right. Police officer degen converted to SS officer degen for the $$$
PS- Is there a MM on the blade? This will help straighten it out. For example, if the blade is an ACS, we know it wouldn't be SS.

Can you also take a photo of the grip botton. Reverse and obverse sides. Grip botton have the wire retention pegs or is it just a flat back button?

Hi! Blade has no MM. Button of the handle - 100 % a copy, and it is known. Knot - too a copy, and it too is known.

Then you know what you have. A police officer degen with someones fake SS grip disc enhancement.
That's it.

Your hanger clip has fake markings on it as well so it has been messed with too I am afraid.

What condition is the blade in? Can you photo it? I'd also like to see the back of the grip botton. I've seen a few grip button repros, and would like to see this one.
I had an SS degen reproduction that was built I belive in the 1960s. There were a few interesting tell tale giveways. The grip botton did not have prongs for attaching in through the grip. Had a celluloid grip, and a dimple in the end of the crossguard teardrop. The dimple hole was very pronounced.

The hilt on this sword is SS NOT Police. Police hilts are not made like this. No doubt about it. The grip has been messed with-to replace an emblem or??????? If you think this is a police sword--back to the books

Sdravtsvojte , I agree with Houston on this. This is a SS officers degen style grip and hilt. Pitomnik, Maybe the runes-disk has been taken out after the war with force, in order to "de-nazify" the sword. I believe the laws in CCCP was strict on swastika's and SS-emblems?? Just my 0,02$ worth.. Regards,

Either the grip button has grip attachement pegs, is flat like a pancake, or crudely cast with terrible cast bits one the flatside. I infer from the poster that there are some post war pats. If th grip button is one, I'd like to see it. I have seen a variety for reproduction grip buttons and would both a photographic reference for future purposes. As a direct answer to your question up to 3. t

Legitimate replacement grip buttons can be purchased on some dealers sites.
In terms of the repros, I have see 3. I had one at one time but didn't photo prior getting rid of it. This one in particular had a flat reverse and was somewhat crudely cast. I wish I had as a reference of carious grip buttons could be of educational value.

Sword Fish--Really? and who has these original replacements ? The correct piece for the early sword--like this one--is as Robert says-one long prong that goes clear through the tang and is bent over under the grip metal back strap. These swords were never meant to be taken apart. In addition a rivet ( shown above ) was placed on the tang over the spanner to prevent the spanner from being tampered with.

I would buy all original SS sword buttons I could find, I am very sad that I sold the only one I ever found. My search is not to upgrate any sword it is that I just love the Fuhrerdegen in all details.
Houston, but not all Degen got the secure spanner cap (Zuendpille).

I agree with Robert that not all SS Officer degens are the non-take down type and not all of the runic buttons have the single prong-- those are the early type. Let's see the ball portion of the knot--just to see if it is not original as stated.

Someone sure put some nasty tool marks on that sword. Makes me a bit mad just to look at it.
