Hi,
I recently picked up this German Police bayonet and would appreciate your thoughts on it. I have several other police bayonets but none have a blade like this.

I believe it is missing a Weimar replublic emblem. I recently found one and will put in on this bayonet if it in fact had one and not a Nazi police emblem.

I'll post some pictures.

Can someone help me with the blade length and what type of emblem it would have had on the grip and any other info.

Thanks, Kalvin aka Blademan.

Nice pickup and a great bayonet, I particularly love the toned stag it has. The blade is a short stiletto type particular to WKC. Ron Weinand also identified Henckels as a manufacturer that utilized this type of blade. Also notice the lower scabbard fitting which is not garden variety either as it is not "scalloped" in the center. A shame it's missing the grip emblem and clamshell, but still very collectible.

I'm of the opinion that this bayonet had the Weimar emblem when it was removed despite it being missing the clamshell. I believe when they added the 3R emblem, the rivets were also replaced with larger aluminum rivets. I've seen a number of similar bayonets that still had the Weimar star although the clamshell had been ground off. You can find a replacement emblem if you look around, try Tom Johnson's site.

I have an identical model in gold with 3R emblem and brown rural scabbard. The piece is very near to my heart.

Thanks for your great information. Are these bayonets with this type of blade worth more than the standard cut down variety?

Thanks again, Kalvin

Here is the Henckels version that Billy mentioned.

Kalvin,

I would say a bayonet with such a stiletto blade would be worth more than a standard 13" cut down variety, strictly based on rarity. Short bladed bayonets are far scarcer than the cut down type, and of short bladed bayonets, the stiletto blade is scarcer still since only WKC and Henckels made them. A nice variation and a beautiful piece to behold even without the grip emblem.

Here's a picture of my WKC. The maker mark is identical to yours, under the clamshell. The only thing I added (not in this picture) was a nice Polizei NCO knot.

Denny,

Great piece, you've done it again. And here I'm thinking the police pieces were safe from your clutches. I think I have to start collecitng Heer dress pieces to even the score Smile

Better view of the grip with the added knot. The frog is a service model but it came with the bayonet and had obviously been on it a while so I left it.

Kalvin,

I know what you mean about the clamshell aesthetically speaking but your bayonet is still very nice and quite scarce as it is. Keep looking, you'll be able to find one with patience. I personally like this one because of the fine detailing on the pommel and the unique blade. WKC made great products.

A grip emblem might dress it up nicely, and you really could use either emblem to finish it. I would recommend Manfred Vogel (a GD forum member) to do the replacement work, he's quite skilled and has worked on many members' daggers/bayonets.

Billy,

Sounds like good advice. When my Weimar insgnia comes in, I will contact Manfred and see wat he says about the work.

I did check Johnson's site and he does sell Nazi police emblems for these.

I am a bit out of the loop on prices of these shorter bladed bayonets. Could you tell me what the price range is on one of these?

Thanks, Kalvin

Your bayonet doesn't appear to have the standard police unit mark. Was it private purchased?

Very nice looking set.

Kalvin,

Your grip looks to have only one hole for an attachment prong. I've seen 2, 3 and 4 as well. Make sure your grip emblem similarly has only one attachment prong, it will make things easier when adding the new grip eagle. Manfred is certainly the man for the job, I'm having do one for me as well.

Tough to say regarding value. Considering the piece's condition and the fact it's missing the clamshell and grip emblem, I would estimate a guess at $750.

Joe,

I believe Kalvin's piece was privately purchased and would have no issue or accountability numbers. My WKC similarly has no such marking either.

Joe,
I beleive the bayonet was privately purchased sine there are no unit markings.

Joe,
I'm pretty sure all of this type of Polizei bayonet were private purchase. The few I have seen had no unit markings. Perhaps Houston or George will give us further info.

Joe,

Yes, your bayonet is a private purchase Extraseitengewehr made by WKC (according to their catalogs). It does not appear that it ever had the later eagle and swastika, so I would replace the grip insignia with a Prussian Polizei star that has only the central attaching prongs that bend outward.
