I need some help. I am out in Iowa on vacation and yesterday we went to an antuique mall. While there, I found a case containing some militaria.
I found a very nice German bayonet. It was selling for $425 and I would like to know more about it and what it is worth. It had a dark blade (grey color) and had darker charcoal colored engraving that said something like this: "Sondershauten Aufkl. Abtlg." It was very fancy so I may have misspelled the engraving a bit. There were numbers on both the scabbard and the bayonet, but they did not match. The scabbard said Munlos 37 so I assume it was a 1937 model? I was also able to read "Coppel GmbH" on the bayonet itself. These are two different comapnies, no? Maybe the scabbard doesnt match the baqonet?
Any info would be greatly appreciated. It was a very nice piece and in great shape... I may buy it if it is worth the price.
Thanks, Jim

84/98's do not come etched and that is most likley what it is from the makers you say, this sounds like one of the many faked SS etched bayonents that are around, many of which are really wonderful works of art but they are worth little. Have a look at my site under fakes/repro's and see mine which is marked to a unit at Dachau. If you like it buy it but under the understanding that it has no value other than that you place on it.

Jim good to hear from you! This forum gets a question on these type bayonets about every month. I think i am going to get all my bayonets engraved like this one since they will bring more money than in their original, matching state :-( If we could only get more sauers engraved too they would bring more money to fantasy buyers.
Why people buy these at these prices is one unknown mystery to serious bayonet collectors. A collector will say man i wont pay 200 buck for a nice matching bayonet yet a non bayonet collector will buy a post war etched k98 bayonet for 425 dollars??? One of the great mysteries of collecting. nuff said.

Oh wow. Thanks for the reply. It was really nice, but I am glad I asked here first. This is a great reference to have.

Hello Jim, the fakers have had made a small mistake by this piece, while they dont known the KM property marking, they added a scout unit of Infantry to blade, Sachsenhausen is a small town in Thueringen, and have no links to navy.best regards,Andy

Hey Andy, your are proberbly right, but it's NOT Sachsenhausen it's more like Sondershausen! quote: Originally posted by AndyB: Hello Jim, the fakers have had made a small mistake by this piece, while they dont known the KM property marking, they added a scout unit of Infantry to blade, Sachsenhausen is a small town in Thueringen, and have no links to navy.best regards,Andy

The etched KM 98K bayonet (@$425.00) ranks right up there IMO with etched SS bayonets for what were essentially imaginary units that existed only on paper at the end of the war. The KM bayonet, however, I think has a much better potential for having some "real history" behind it. With the bayonet being a commemorative model issued to the intrepid Ostsee Naval Reconnaissance Commandos who were scouting in the Thuringian forests looking for wood to build small boats. And fighting off the Dreaded Thuringian Forest Elves (DTFE) guarding the woods from interlopers. Unfortunately for me, I left my wallet in my other pair of pants. And will have to let somebody else scoop up this beauty. FP

FP I have heard that too much time colelcting can cause problems, it seems those people are right, I am afraid the only cure is to remove your source of infection, I seem to be immune so if you send over that nasty horrible sharp and pointy bit collection to me I will take good care and you will eventually recover.
With your best interestes at heart (honest)

Kevin ,thanks for the note, my mistakes, i was looking Sondershausen, and then added to board Sachsenhausen? Sorry. the story behind the etch from FP is great, so must be done, they need woods for the boats.

Carl my friend, Too much time collecting? Moi?? If only it were that simple. I do appreciate your most kind offer to help cure me of my condition which has lasted for many years. Lacking any natural immunity - once the collecting bug bit me (as a small lad) I had times when my affliction seemed to go away. But unfortunately it always returned usually stronger than when it left. For those that missed it here is the other side of the Ostsee bayonet that was posted - showing the units motto. FP

Fred If you ever feel the need, then theoffer will stay open, until such time as this house sinks from the weight of all that steel, brass, wood and chrome! last guess was my collection was now topping 1500lbs, should i stop at the ton?

Carl, Its time to stop when the floor sags in the middle. And the walls bow inward making the inside of the room look like the inside of a church steeple. Or the house starts to slide off the hill. Like that of a friend of mine which slid off a hill (actually a mountainside) in Malibu. Till then Ill keep the offer in mind Best Regards, FP

Carl,
All constructions have a specific area/weight ratio. You have probably broke the law already. You now have two options : (a) move to an industrial estate (b) send your collection to me.
I guess (b) is a much better option, as industrial estate usually have a bad smell and your neighbours might be quite noisy.

Wrong place ! Celler is for wine only, too humid for blades. British Airways now going special package : HK - London round trip cost 1/2 the $$$ of a 36 Simonov.

Keith (and Carl), Thinking about it - at roughly 2 pounds each (1 kg.) - at 1500 pounds that would indicate perhaps 750 bayonets. A) Im not so sure that Carl is "immune". B) Methinks that he might not be the only one who is "infected". Best Regards to All, FP

Jim,
I do, I mean I really DO enjoy the "banter" you guys spoofing each other in this Form. Makes it more fun and well worth reading. JIM: I can't tell you how many times I mention to some of the neo-bayonet collectors who stop by my table at the MAX and SOS that just looking at the book I researched for years might help them save money from buying a reproduction or a faked etched bayonet. I say that even if they're not necessarily an etched DRESS bayonet collector, someday, someone will ask them an opinion about an etched example or they themselves may find something that just by looking in the Reproduction and Red Flag section of my book will help them from spending a great deal of money on a piece of junk! And yet, there a still guys out there who don't believe me and pass on "the book". This is a GREAT example of how "the book" would have saved you a great many dollars.....sorry you have learned the hard way.

I didn't buy it. I came here first and got some very good info and I am glad I did!
What book and where can I get it? I am not really a bayonet collector, but it looked very nice, that is why I asked about it.
Thanks,
Jim

Jim, My book is titled German Etched Dress Bayonets (Extra-Seitengewehre) 1933-1945. You can get it from Tom Johnson, Tom Wittmann or directly from me. Price is $ 55.00 + 2.50 P&S. Let me know if you wish it autographed. I will send it out immediately if you wish a copy. Please let me know at [email protected]. Since the book was published I haven't had any poor reviews or collectors who didn't think it was worth the money. Let me know....Wayne Techet Von Ryan

and worth every penny!. If this is the field of collecting you are interested in or have seen examples you havent been sure about, Waynes book is a must. There will come a time when pictures alone and help from forum members cant be relied upon, whether its because of poor picture quality or just the fact that you need a quick response. Having this book gives you the data to make an informed decision, $55 now or $300 on a mistake later. p.s I dont get commission, but I for one am grateful for the hard work that must have gone into the research .
