All,
I've now wound up with three K98 bayos, all three of which are mixed parts, two of which I just recently purchased from Century Arms International.
Since these are already mixed parts, I'm giving thought to rearranging the grips.

First bayo is a S174G, probably original finish, as it looks parkerized, there is rust on flashguard, discoloration on blade. Handles are Bakelite.
This bayo and pics was dicussed on here many months ago, and I believe it was decided it was pre-war, was rebuilt, and Bakelite grips were not originally on this bayo.

Next bayo is from CAI, is 41FZE, with very good blueing, dark wooden grips. (Some finish missing from tip from scabbard.)

Next bayo is from CAI, is COF44, light colored wooden grips, excellent blueing. (No flashguard.)

CAI bayos came with scabbards with very good to excellent blueing, one being a BYM4, the other a 43ASW. (Non-matching, of course.)

My intention is to put the Bakelite grips on a bayo proper for that.

I'm assuming that since these bayos are mismatched numbers, that moving parts around doesn't affect their "value?" (CAI bayos were $50.00 each, S174G bayo was $30.00.)

I'm going to keep one, maybe two of these, by the way.

Not a bayo collector, really, just want one for my K98, maybe an extra.

I can post pix if it's necessary.

Thanks!
Eric

Hello Eric, please could You send more details about Your pieces, serial numbers with letters and details from scabbards, the S/174G should be with wood grips, the 41fze with dark plastik grips, the cof44 could be correct but it depends from series letter. best regards,Andy

Hi Eric. From a value stand-point, the damage has already been done since the parts are mixed up. But, When did this occur? If it was post-war, then no problem "fixing" the mix-up. But if these were mixed during wartime rebuilds, you are messing with legitimate variations.

I too have a bayonet that appears to be quite mixed up. It appears to be a wartime rebuild, and has been together like this from the end of the war. I have no intention of screwing with it, even though it would be very easy to correct some of the "errors".

You can see it here:

JMO- Hope this helps!

John

P.S. Another one of my bayos, a cof44, has the light-colored wooden grips also.

Hello, it could real, but the Johns piece have one problem, the screws are turned in opposite direction, so it must be done postwar, or by previous owner, to researched it as correct rework, must be seen the inner stamps under grips. The sharping speaks for postwar upgrades, only super thing on this is a AK frog. best regards,Andy

Andy, Thanks for your input on my bayonet.

I don't want to hijack this thread, but I have had the grips off this bayonet and there are several stamps underneath. What would I look for that would signify a rebuild?

I did know about the grip bolts being on backwards and corrected that when I reattached the grips.

Thanks in advance!

To John and his piece, the S/173 G is mostly seen with wood grips, when the added plastik ones are correct upgrade should be have matching assembly numbers found on tang under the grips, the flashguard could be same proofed, same on locking stud, maybe any numbers visible when pushing the press button, and see for stamps on protruding opposite site. best regards,Andy
The pictures or detailed desciption is important.
