Gary,
Some time ago in holland a similar gorget surfaced on a local free advertisement website. I didn't go for it because I didn't and still don't believe it to be original.
Also a friend in Germany recently located a similar designed gorget which I also do not believe in.

The eagle on it IMHO is one for the Cartouche box or Crashhelmet. The eagles that I believe should be on these gorgets have a slightly different shape. This different shape can also be recognised in period photographs.

I believe JWotka posted this picture of an original gorget from his collection some time ago.

Note the different shape of the eagle.

Gary,

On the reverse, that appears to be a nut on the stud of a Tshako insignia. I can't imagine an orginal was made that way. Also, I’ve only seen pictures of a couple originals, although the pictures don’t provide nearly enough detail to be comfortable with them. Given the scarcity and value of originals, I’m not surprised to see attempted reproductions.

Really, your questions need to be answered by someone that actually owns or has had his hands on originals over the years.
