hello.

I have stepped out of the box again. i do have a 100% guarantee if not happy. This is only the second Helmet of this type i have had a close up inspection of. I have some concerns and think the entire item is fake. your opinions would be welcome.

22 Thanks for looking. I am a little wary because of the condition, the strapping and the wire. It came from a reliable source and has been in a private collection for over 30 years.

regards

IMO there are no original molecules in that helmet. The liner and straps are a complete reproduction. Not even close. The shell appears to be the wrong shape, so I'm 99% sure it's a fake too. It is a reworked M-40 or M42 if it really has been sitting somewhere for 30 years, which I doubt, because I think it one of the Czech fakes which began appearing about 1990. However, the wire is definitely fake, and the paint is definitely bad. It might be worth $100 to a reenactor. If you paid more than that for it, get your money back fast.

Excellent. You have confirmed my suspicions. this is mot my subject area hence the post. I looked at the stamping on the green stud and saw the word "BROS" seemed very odd for German maker to stamp items with an English abbreviation.. The finish on the rim was very rough and I could see snipper/cut marks, the shape was wrong and the centre line off. It may help others to identify copies.

Also imagine if the poor guy had hit his head against one of those nuts!!

I had already rang the owners friend and appraised him of my concerns. It is being returned to him this weekend with very good reasons.

Thanks

Out of curiosity, what was the price of the helmet?

Chris.

It would have cost 1800. I feel that if it had been an original it would have been closer to 3000, so i was wary from the start.

Frank,
As you said on the phone, your suspicions have been confirmed, I also like the subtle backdrop, taking the pictures on your bin lid....is that like an early warning signal Smile.
Some of these Czech fakes are mighty convincing to the untrained eye and as Dave H has pointed out in the helmet forum, many collectors are just are not confident enough anymore to risk big bucks on the high end helmets.
Glad you can recoup and look on the bright side, that SMF army is 100% Smile.

You're a little out of touch on prices. If that helmet was original, with the Normandy camouflage paint and the wire, it would have sold easily five times with five phone calls in five minutes for $25,000. (13,000). Ordinary Normandy camos now sell for $15,000, usually by word of mouth between collectors.
