Here is a new acquisition that I just received. It is the small sized Brannik Youth knife made by Robert Klass. It was worn by the Hungarian youth, ages from 10 to 14. They were referred to as the Young Eagles. It has a Cyrillic B emblem on the grip for Brannik and is translated : “Guardians”. The emblem has a greenish background and stands up from the grip quite a ways. In Kurt’s book, he says his has a red background. I don’t know what the significance of the different colored backgrounds means. Maybe someone can help us out on this. I don’t know if it will show up on the photos, but the grips are a reddish/brownish color like the k-98 field bayonet grips. The scabbard and the leather are also reddish/ brown. The length of this knife is a little over 20 cm. [The older youth knife is 25 cm long but identical otherwise]. It has a motto on the blade that translates “Duty and Honor”. It is also stamped with the Robert Klass logo. The knife and scabbard are in excellent shape. The fittings has almost 100% of the nickel present. The scabbard has a very few chips in the paint and the leather is supple. The blade has been sharpened, as most youth knives are. There are inexperienced sharpening marks on the blade. That is the only thing that detracts from the piece. Kurt rates these as extremely rare. Bill aka chubbs250

Very nice piece.
I have always been interested in the DJ/HJ knives that were issued in other countries.

Here is a Spanish youth knife. That is also hard to find. I have taken an interest in them also. It may take a life time but i am going to try and collect an example of all of them as finances allow. bill

Hi,
My Brannik knife is very similar (also made by Klaas), but distinctive in that the Cyrillic "b" letter has a black background, and the grip scales are black, but the enamel paint on the scabbard and the leather hanging strap are dark brown (not black - definitely dark brown).
Also my example is issue numbered on the front of the crossguard with the number: 258.
These pieces are not Hungarian (as previously surmised, but Royal Bulgarian - hence the use of teh Cyrillic alphabet.

Thanks for the reply's. The color on this one is what I would call a dark redish brown, it almost looks black till it is in bright light. Any one have a idea on why the different colors on the grips and emblems?? I really dont know much about this youth group, but in Germany the youths were involved in firefighting, panzer divisions, and about every other function you can think of. I would guess it would have somthing to do with different functions of the groups. But strictly a guess!! Bill
