hello all, i`ve just wandered over from the helmets section of this site, where i`m normally found, to ask a couple of questions my job entails me going to peoples homes, and on the wall in a house this morning they had what i now believe to be, following reading this section for the last thirty minutes, a heer officers sword. brass lions head, red eyes, eagle and swastika, long thin blade etc, in good condition, i didn`t think to look at the etching. it`s minus the scabbard which was stolen when the owners late father ran a pub and had it on the wall in the bar sometime back in the sixties!. it has no `knot`or cord( you can tell i know my stuff eh??!!) , just the actual sword , how common/rare are these?, and roughly what are they worth?. where they issued to all heer officers? any info will be gratefully received and passed on to the elderley owners. it was a vet `pickup` by the late father in law, and will be handed on to the grandson who`s studying at oxford university at the moment, so hopefully it`ll survive. i think the more i can tell them about the sword, the greater it`s chances of reaching the next millenium. thanks in advance, i`ll slope off back where i belong now!! blueboy

Welcome BB, German officers paid for thier sabers so there are many varations. Most are very similar and common. It's the odd and unusual that bring big dollars. The common ones go for around $300.00 USD. Scabbards can be found but it must be matched to the sword. The lenght depened on the height of the officer.

thanks for the response dale. as i say ,the info i glean i will pass on the couple who have the sword, i`ve no intention of trying to get it off them, swords ain`t my thing. different sized swords depending upon the height of the owner, the germans truly thought of everything!. but then it`s no different to the steel helmets i suppose. where there a standard set of blade sizes or were they made `to order`?.and when did production end/begin, do we know?, sorry to ask so many questions, but this is all new to me. all the best, steve.

Glad to be of help. I believe sword production went on up to the end and after. There were regs. that discontinued wear during the war excepe for parades and such. The missing scabbard takes away about half the value. Here is a size chart from Eickhorn.
