This is essentially a reworked regular Eickhorn ground Rohm. I have seen a couple of these that I thought were real and there are one or two in reference books as well. They had good baldes where this one does not. This is probably just me, but if the seller starts with a story like "Ok, more from my friend who just got out of the hospital asked me to sell a couple things for him. You will be helping a Vet!" then I start to wonder. Dave

Would a genuine engraved crossguard have a Gau stamp? I'm not claiming to know the answer, but it just doesn't seem right to me. If you go back through the seller's feedback you'll see that he's sold several Third Reich hats. It would be interesting if some of the uniform gurus could take a look and chime in. He's also offering right now a SS blade with a hole through the tang. And always the same story about helping a vet.

http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=98467413 The person who checkered this hit the eagle on several strokes. Look at the general wear over the eagle and crossguards, the checkering is very crisp, dead giveaway. I always like the looks of a checkered grip though! Bret Van Sant

Sweet looking grip, too bad it's been tarted up. I'm with you Bret, I love the looks of a checkered grip.

I wouldn't know enough about a dagger like this to even comment on it! Like Dave, I have seen a couple of these in reference books. SSman

What ever anybody says, I don't believe that these have ever existed. To me, they are pure fantasy and wouldn't want them in my collection. Just my opinion and anybody is entitle to its own.

Hey Guys, The engraving on the crosguards is TERRIBLE!!! Any true German artisan or craftsman during the Third Reich would be turning in his grave if he saw that!!!! Dion

An original checkered grip SA/NSKK are rare but not unheard of. Here's one that has T.W's approval with great provenance. It's not mine. Will be show in T.W's. book. -serge- P.S. I need to say nothing on the "thing" above.

If that's the one Bud Hasher owned back in '87, I think the blueing has been added. I remember holding his the day he was taking the picture I used in the '88 calendar. I honestly don't remember the blueing. I can't see it in the calendar either. The guy who had this one at the last MAX told me it originally came from Bud but I'm not sure. Do you have any further info on it? Who knows? I could be totally wrong, it has happened before.

Yes, the owner told me he purchased it from Bud Hasher of N.J. It's "supposed" to be 100% straight, but I don't know. Do you remember this blade dedication? -serge-

There was a dedication but I never got a photo of it. Did it sell at the MAX. I haven't seen Bud in years. He lived by me when I was in NJ. I'll try to locate him and ask about the blueing.

Can you translate the dedication? Bud's was supposedly a Marine Harbor Patrol Dagger. Tom Johnson gave it his blessing so I used it.

It translates to: "In rememberance of the (date) 7/2/1939 Marine Staff Hamburg." It would be interesting to see what happened in Hamburg on that date. The date would be Feb 7th 1939 (not July 2nd as it would be written in the U.S.).

It did not sell at the MAX. It wasn't out in "The Open". But I did hand inspect it and the owner allowed me to photo it there at the MAX. I did make him a "substantial" offer on it but he wanted IMO a "Huge" ammount. He said that he knew Bud back in the "Old Days" and that Bud got all his "stuff" from the Vets coming off the boats...that's what I heard.
I can't translate it all. But it does say "Marinestaff - Hamburg"

I do all I can, and that's all I can do. I saw this dagger at the MAX as well, very impressive! I love the NSKK eagle in the grip which is much larger than the standard grip eagles. Looks amazing!

I'm with Pat on this - wouldn't want one in my collection - would always have the doubt factor about it unless I got directly from a vet's hands myself.

Brian, Yes, not great but I wanted the dagger back quick under the table. -serge- The scabbard fittings were blued and the scabbard body had IMO period black leather "pebbeled" cover.

Serge: Look at the February 1988 photo in my calendar. The crossguards and scabbard fittings are plain nickle silver and there is a single hanger. Call me crazy, but I think some enhancements have been made. Brian

Also, I think back in '87 when the photo was taken the scabbard leather was brown.

Now THERE is a "Collector for you boys and girls! Yes that's what he calls himself A COLLECTOR! Brian, I just took a couple of shots the the dagger in it's "before" state from your calender. Do I have your permission to post it here? ... after dinner? -serge-

Sure, anytime. I was going to add my usual "Wisebutt" comment about it being stored in the proverbial "Heated Sock Drawer in the Attic" but decided not to. That would be the only other explanation for the darker fittings and black scabbard.

Interesting... I also have Notaguru's calendars (thanks!) and looking at the pic. in it the dagger appears to have "gold" washed fittings. This would make sense if it was a Marine dagger... Now however they appear blued and the scabbard leather has changed as well..... WHY would some one do this??? There was NOTHING wrong with the dagger in it's original state!!!!
