very interesting Naval Stein...I see the word York in the name of the ship...what kind of a ship was it? I am sure it wasnt a battleship...please let us know...does it say Kreuzer or Zerstoerer? As you know this is a Stein made of clay (pottery) not porcelain like most of the army ones...therefore it has no lithopane...also the army ones are usually .5L also please let us know the years of service...they usually end by about 1912 since the sailor did not get it until he got out of the service...so anybody that entered after 1912 would have become a reservist in 1915. By that time WWI had started and they were notallowed to get out (early version of the present stop-loss policy). Also time and materials became got more valuable. A very nice stein...congrats...your SteinMeister...Roland.

If that was the Kaiseryacht "York" it would even make it rare...

Thanks Mr. Sheck
I am sorry it has taken me so long to answer your post. Here is a better picture of the name of the ship and date of service.
Thank you so much for the information. I acquired this stein at an estate auction in 1989 of a WWI vet that was a member of the 353rd Bn. of the 89th Inf. Division in WWI.

first and most important...the SteinMeister's name is Roland... Big Grin for a second I thought you were talking to the fellow standing next to me...

the real important matter here is this...are you going to sell that Stein? I would like to know what it brings at auction...I could bring a real good price...since it was NOT a warship...that was the Kaiser's Yacht...as such it is very rare in my opinion. Please dont ask me what it would be worth...only at auction would you find that out...but it would be considerable I think...regards...your SteinMeister

Thanks Roland.
Value is always a relative matter. I imagine in a few years I will probably send it to one of G. Kirsner's auctions. But right now I just really enjoy owning it.
It is a great pleasure to have your expert advice on the piece though. I am just one of those folks that has gathered up a bunch of stuff over the years. A small collection of mostly civilian steins in this catagory. Just stuff drug home by veterans.
Thanks
Steve
