I'm psyched guys...I'm known mostly for German belt buckles and armbands but I've always wanted a WW2 Japanese "samurai" sword. Well, I found one and it showed up today! Great condition on the blade, matching numbers and dent free scabbard. She's not mint by any means but I'm happy for a first time acquisition.
I'll post some pics and ask lots of questions. Any help would be great!
Thanks gang!

Rob

Here's a quick question: Have a look at this mark on the blade, located just after the serial number. Does this mean anything to anyone? Is it a maker stamp? Does anyone recognize it?
Thanks...

handle looks like it's brown in color but there is a tint of red to it. Pics were taken in bright sunshine. Is it as simple as taking that screw out in order to take the sword apart? I'm not sure if that is easy or not - I'd hate to "muck it up". Should I try?

Nice clean piece there. I like the grip on this one a lot. Mine were both quite brown. Also like the scabbard on this and of course the matching numbers.
Good goin!

Thanks...

I beleive it's an arsenal mark. It's been just soo long since I had them I don't remember all the nuances.

Hi Lloyd! Glad you like it buddy! I think it's killer! I had no idea the blade was so "heavy duty" on these - especially when I compare it to my Pantherhead E.Pack German infantry sword! heheheh!
Here's another couple shots...

Last one for now....Here's another mark I found on the bottom of the scabbard....any info on this would also be great!
Thanks guys...finally - I'm assuming this is an army sword and not naval right?
Cheers!

That "shin-gunto" (neo-army sword), that you have, was a government issue piece and I know of no Navy models that I have ever seen though I could be wrong. The only Navy models I had were the dark blue ray skin scabbard models with shin-gunto mountings.

Hello;
A very nice example of a military issue blade.
DO NOT take the handle off, there is no need. That type is massed produced and the blade tang (handle) will tell you nothing. There is no need to get tool marks on the fixtures. The neat thing about this type of sword is that it was produced to fight with as opposed to the dress items of other countries. I have always liked fighting blades. They are not as pretty as dress blades but they were in the field being used while the history was made.
Great find.

EXACTLY! I don't remember taking an NCO apart but I DO remember taking each and every Samauri apart, even before purchase at a show. Pop the mekugi out, (if there was one), hold the grip in my right hand with blade upwards, hit my right wrist with the flat of my left hand and check the tang out! Geez, seems like yesterday!

No worries: I won't try and take this one apart!

Rob, I would "like" to but just cannot afford those toys any longer. I never even took pics of the swords when I had them. Somewhere, I have professional pics of the tangs on quite a few as a guy that was doing a book come to my house and photographed the tangs, got translations and sent me a set of the pics.
There IS a shop in Loma Linda, CA that sells Samurai and from what I have been told by a friend, my name hs been bandied about by cusomers that remember my old collection and mention me there. With altogether 40 swords, I had a pretty large collection back then. Of course thy were quite cheap then, even from Manion's.

Hey Steph, mon homme! Yeah man - looks like my luck turned around! I missed the other one that Paul had (no cash to buy at that time and then it was sold) but I finally found one and I'm quite happy with it! I'll make sure to bring it down the next time we get together!
Nice to hear from you buddy!

Cheers!

Yeah, they set me back a bit "in the day". I remember a guy had quite a few that I got at all one time. Cost me an AR15 with 1000 rds of .223, magazines, scope, bipod, etc. Thing is there were Katana, Wakashi, Tanto, Aikuchi and all but one really nice swords.
Today, I only have a set of court swords in leather scabbards. One is German, the other Japanese. The two swords cross over each other over a wooden affair with a crane and over the swords, a silver plaque with Japanese characters incised thereon.
The Japanese sword has a "paulownia" flower on the guard, (see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mon_(badge)

The German court sword has a gold braid knot with, I believe a crown on it. I have been told that the set is from a Chinese province that Germany and Japan jointly administered.

No Rob, not at all. One day, (I say that a LOT), I'll get my daughter to photograph my stuff and post it here. I really would like to get an idea from the knowledgeable folks here what the set "means". The Japanese characters HAVE to give a hint and I sure don't read those characters. I used to use a book to "try" and translate the sword tangs. I often got enough words to get the name and ofen more info as well. NOT easy!

Rob, that you shall do Sir! We moved about 7 months ago and are in process of dividing a 1040 sq ft room into two. One will be Family Room and the other 600+ sq feet will be for my "toys", most of which are packed.
I never really learned to "consolidate and specialize" therefore my collections run from TR daggers, West Point memorabilia, postcards, trench art, books, books and MORE books! Then there ar the odds and ends as well. I have more crap than a museum but not a ton of each item. If I was advising a new person about collecting, I would suggest "specialization". I am going to start a new thread soon. I think you will enjoy the responses, least I hope so.
