The most believable story comes from the higher ranking SA/SS that survived the war. It was stored in the NSDAP HQ in Munich and was destroyed in an air raid.

There are all kinds of rumors floated at one time or another. Hidden in the Bavarian or remote Austrian Alps*; Taken by submarine to Brazil; Captured by the Russians; etc.

Can you imagine the hoopla if it surfaced ? Big Grin

Dave's right, no one really knows. Even post war interviews with Grimminger had no results. Some say that Grimminger rescued the BF and it now rests in a German collection.

Best story I've heard is that Bob Hope somehow owns it! There are even those that swear that they've seen it in his private office! Razz

A wild guess,, I'd say the Blood Flag and the Adolf Hitler standard [one missing from the pole the Russians have] were wrapped around Hitlers body when they set him ablaze...........

I had heard that the AH DE standarte flag was found by George Peterson, rolled up in a store room, the Russians had it, but didn't know (they still have it)

The piece Bob Hope had was the small LAH flag that was on the DE Standart for the LAH. Take from Sepp D. when the LAH surrendered in Austria and given to Hope at that time. The DE Standart itself is in the Moscow Museum with a poor substitue flag on the piece as seen in many photos from the museum display.
I heard that the Blut Flag was held by Grimminger after the war in his apartment in Munich until he died a few years ago and sold by his wife to a collector in Germany.

If Grimminger had anything to do with the Blut Fahne's survival, he surely did not profit from it. He died in poverty...

I can only imagine that some of the early hunters of militaria (from personalities of the Third Reich) gave but a pittance to his widow for his regalia.

The poletop may have survived, however.

Grimminger lived on a small pension that he received due to his service on the Munich City council during the war. He died in 1969 and his wife died in 1982. To the very end he claimed no knowledge on the whereabouts of the BF.

Everyone was totally surprised when the flag surfaced. His wife said it was under his bed the whole time after the war until he died.
As I have been told it was with his uniform and gorget with all the trappings.
It was special to him and he guarded it to the end.

Hi Ron do you or anyone know what happened to the LAH standard owned by Bob Hope? I heard that his collection was auctioned after his death...Did Wolfe-Hardin handle the appraisal/disposal? cheers

Why has the flag never been seen in a public forum, after its discovery(i.e. magazine, journal, visual media etc.)?

Here's a picture from the summer 2009 issue of the Military Advisor. According to Blaine Taylor, author of the article, George A. Patersen found the cloth part of the LSSAH standard in the flag room of the Central Armed Forces Museum. M. Patersen made the discovery in 1990.
