Hi guys I have been collecting German militaria since 1982 but I, like others don't profess to know everything. I would like to think that I am pretty astute when it come to Third Reich headgear. I was told many years ago that the one rule of thumb to look out for when collecting Luftwaffe officer caps (and also EMs) was to make certain that the capband joining seam was at the front of the cap. The seam is always on the front on Luft caps and Heer and SS are on the reverse. This is one way to detect a reproduction Luftwaffe cap...Also the center cap bands were a standard width on all caps. I have handled 100s of Luft caps over the years and own many and I have never seen an original cap where the cap seam is not at the front, hidden by the insignia...also all of the caps had the same width of cap band. Are these two factors still undisputable? Thanks and regards, Ryan

Ryan, Yes your correct about the front seam on the Luftwaffe, it also applies to Kreigsmarine visors also.

Thanks Karl so is it safe to assume that if a Luftwaffe officer visor has the seam at the reverse and a narrow, non standard width center cap band that it is a reproduction? I make my statement considering that the cap is not a foreign produced cap. I have never seen an authentic period Luftwaffe officer's visor with the seam at the reverse. cheers, Ryan
