I came across this Flemish shield. At first I thought it was good but at closer examination I realised it had some differences when compared to other known examples. Is this new well done fake or just some variation?

1. This is the shield. As you can see it varies in those three areas that I marked:

1. While other shields have three hairs on the mair, this one has only two.

2. Other shields have space between the back and the tail and in this case its touching.

3. There is an empty spot on the leg, while other shields don't have this.

I would like to add that this shield came along with other Dahau items that are definately original like this Norway shield.

Gerd V asked me to put the shields together for a beter comparison. If you note, even the other shields have some minor differences between themselves..ie. the lion from Ian's site does not have an eye.

These Volunteer Shields are Always a nightmare - because so many were locally made! Multiple variations...(To my eye... all 3 are OK ...BUT...

Bob Hritz is the person I'd ask for clarification.

He is always a straight shooter & so very knowledgeable in his opinions.

you might not be getting answers because of this specific shield..When I was putting Dachau depot stored shields all together the straight side Croation, the Danish and this Flemish shield seemed the hardest to get! Also while most of these Dachau type of shields had a thick white back this type you could see the black embroidery lines..

I'd say every Flemish shield that I saw in a vets hand and the one I had for a while had the 3 hairs on the lions chest.
It would seem there should be the space between the lion and tail [your #2]..Small dots missing and slight mis alignments would be o.k...Jusy my opinion on these,,while being hard to find they're not that hard! ,go for more of a 'textbook' one..Hopefully a more experience member with these in their collection will eventually comment...,G.

Thank you Dave and Gaspare for responding! I did get Bob Hritz to examine it and he gave the thumbs up. Also number of Flemish collegues agreed on its originality. As for minor differences I thing its just variations - similarly to the way name LATVIJA is written on the Latvian shields - I've seen at least four variations.
