I recently bought a really rough and mistreated HJ, and I am in the middle of the restoration project. Its has been a beauty, looks to me like a pretty fine transitional, for all I know.

Unfortunately the scabbard has been repainted to the "usual" grey colour, and when looking closer, one can see fragments of the surface finish on the button attached to the leather strip that closes around the knife grip. The only letters that can be seen is the first two, "WE". What can this mean? Since the knife itself is a Wusthof, could it be that WE means some other maker, and its not the original scabbard?

The manufacturer of the button is usually not related to the knife maker, so they shouldn't match. Some buttons aren't marked at all, some with asterix star or diamond shapes. Some are marked with the name of the button/snap manufacturer. Sometimes there is a shape or style of scabbard which is usual or unique to a blade manufacturer. For example, some Eickhorn HJ's have a classic rounded bottom to the base of the scabbard. Pics would help.
